Is it possible that on a cooler night cruising on the highway with plenty of airflow that your oil might not see 200 degrees? I guess this would also depend on where your geographically located with northern states more at risk?
When you say "at risk" of not seeing 200 degrees, do you mean that it needs to beat least 200 degrees? I have added a bar and plate cooler to my oil, and I usualy dont see oil temps over 185. Is this a problem?
Air to oil all the way for a track car bro-we had a Ron Davis/DRM on Ontariovettes car and mounted a cooler like this:
I don't think the oil has ever gone over 185 after thrashing it.
Good job Bret!
I'm a little obsessive here but I like this mounting location better.
beautiful oil cooler. I've always wanted to put one way out back with a fan flowing through it. my tranny cooler is "out front" and I don't like the hot air and blocking cool air getting to the intercooler and making it into and interheater

The idea is to get the oil to the boiling point for water to help remove moisture and other contaminants that are better able to evaporate. Last night was relatively cold and Unless I was thrashing the car, I wasn't able to keep the temps anywhere near 200 degrees.

From what I've read oil needs to reach over 200 degrees to burn off any moisture. On short drives this could lead to blow by and fuel in your oil which compromises its protection and should be changed more frequently. Most piston and ring manufactures base clearances on temps around 200 degrees for oil. I also believe a heavier weight oil increases temperatures and probably not necessary unless your motor is built with loose clearances.
five different style oil thermostats in summit, i just ordered the permacool in line. i had a inline check valve in my car from canton for the last 2 years that is also very important especially with the cooler in the rad it will drain back. it stopped the low oil pressure on cold starts.

Thanks for all the answers. I have noticed a little more blow-by also. And sounds like that may be due to the cooler oil temps. Both my oil cooler and trans cooler have spall fans with inline temp units that turn on the fans at 170. They are not ajustable. I might need to just pull the fuse on my oil cooler fan and just use it on track days or possibly in the summer if it is real hot. I wish I had taken some pictures of my set up befor I put the bumper cover back on. I will do it next time it is off for sure.
Is your rad laid back for the sc? I recently installed basically the same setup you have. At the track Thurs, oil temps were up to 292* and now coolant was over 230*. Apparently, I have some air flow issues. Have you noticed your coolant temps being higher? Here are some pics of mine from the top:

My radiator isn't laid back. Just dropped down. My coolant temps might be slightly higher. I'll need to see what it does in the middle of the summer.
I don't know that I would use the B&M cooler. It's more for trans fluid. I would be concerned with the flow or lack thereof causing an oil pressure drop. My cooler is 2" thick.

Bret, thanks man for the post. Just the car back and with the kenne bell my oil temp was 256 on the interstate with never getting into the boost. And my trans was hotter also I got are order 2 of the same earls cooler as you have. Hope to get them put in this next weekend, that will be a weekend job for me. Love the 2.8 man also like the cam jeff got for me sounds good..
