Default 402 FI engine?or 383??

Im looking for some advise on which way to go since I have to get my engine rebuilt. I curremtly have a D1 procharger and am looking the best way to go as far as getting an engine built that will hold up to the D1. Also if anyone have any estimates of what this will cost please let me know.. Or should I just buy a crate engine?

I'm having my 383 put together as we speak $7000 full forged bottom end installed and ready to go with a tune. EPP is doing all the work.

My 408 with callies crank, callies rods, wiseco pistons, ARP everything came to $4500. I could have cheaped out on heads and put this together for $6K but I splurged on TFS.

I used LME for my 347ci. $4000 for the machine work, Weisco pistons, Manley rods, ARP 2000 rod bolts, Custom Cam Motion cam, Melling oil pump, and Double roller timing chain. All balanced and blueprinted wih spec sheet and tolerances. No need for a aftermarket crank on my application.

In any event, I would go with the 402, or even the stock LS2 block with good internals. Its always been my understanding that the 382ci wasnt optimal for FI, but I could be wrong.

I think the 241 heads are going to severaly restrict the airflow needed by the 402. Get a set of 317 heads. I got mine for $150 and they were freaking flawless. Also. make sure you put a good spring on them

I am in the middle of a 402 forged from Texas Speed. Will not be a crate motor as we are modifying the build to our wants and needs. All forged components are top of the shelf and we are building it for Armegedden. New Comp Cam that is going to slam the air home. Going with a new fuel system and porting out and modifying my Trickflows for a 4" motor, I'm staying with my LS6 intake and T/B. I'm looking at around $8-$9K all up for the work.

One thing I have learned about this forum. It is the GREATEST place to get information and opinions. BUT, when you are spending this kind of coin, it is best to do your own homework, talk to someone in your locale that you trust and be very specific on your goals of the car.

I laughed just recently on a posting I had about my car on the dyno and the poster was busting my tuners butt about a tune that he put on my car. This guy has over 6,000 pull's on his dyno and has been doing it for 25 yrs. He has Vipers transported in from all over the country to tune them. The poster's profile states that he is a frick'n office worker and he post's like he is an expert. This is why that we need we need to follow up with the experts that we know.

I have read many postings lately about people with your problems. I believe if we make our decisions based off of just these postings it costs us $$$. You read into it what you want. Flame on!

Some of his lower cost was because he has a iron block. I only went with a 383 because I bought it from a buddy, if you can afford it go with the 402 though.

Ohhh man that D1 would love the 402.

I think for me personally that if I ever have to do another motor that a 402 would be the choice - but of course I'd need to step up to the D1 ProCharger

Thanks,Matt
