Default cam sensor code?

I have the stock engine, the ecs sc 600 kit, and a few other bolt ons and my car seems to be running fine. My oil pressure sensor is out so I ordered a new one along with the relocation kit from Jeff@TPE. Anyway, when I go wot my check engine light comes on. I took it to my friends house to check it, don't remember the exact code right now, but it said cam sensor high output or something like that. We cleared it out then when I went wot on the way home it came on again. Potential problem? If anyone can give me insight on this that would be awesome.

Thanks,
Brett

Its a good chance the bolts retaining the Cam timing gear are working their way out. Some what common and should be addressed quickly.

Here's the GM service manual answer too.

Hmmm well my car only has 39K miles and the engine has never been removed and the internals are still completely stock.

You are leaving out a bit of detail.
So, the car was running fine.
And you did do the oil sensor relocation?

Did the CEL start AFTER you did the oil sensor/relocation, or before?

The reason I ask is because you could have a loose connector at the cam sensor, since it is in the direct location of the oil press sensor, and you may have knocked it loose somehow.

When you go WOT, the engine will torque to one side a bit, which may be causing the CEL.

Just a thought.

I haven't actually done the oil relocation yet, so I've never taken off my intake manifold. I guess my friend and I will check it out when we get the kit in a few days.

Funny. I just read the GM service manual and it makes no mention of anything mechanical, yet every time I have seen someone with this code, it ends up being a mechanical issue.

Under diagnostic aids it speaks about mechanical issues. Excessive camshaft end play will set this code intermittently. Just repaired one 2 weeks ago. When the bolts loosen up it forces the cam to the rear of the engine which sets the code. It only takes about an 1/8 inch of movement to set the code.

Well, that's a bummer!
Thought it might be something simple, but it appears you may have more going on in there.
Good luck.

I agree that it is the cam bolts that are backing out. It is a common things after force induction. There are many threads on the forum about that. Check that your sensor connection is seated. After that have a look at the cam bolts. BTW the age of the engine does not seem to matter. What seems to be common is factory cam shaft and force induction. My cam bolts backed out with only 3900 miles and no one has been in the engine before. That is less than 4000 original miles on the car. But the fix is simple (unless the bolt(s) back completely out), retorque with loctite. Good luck.

Might as well complicate it just a little more and add a tasty new blower cam.

I had a cam position sensor code recently, it it turned out to be a crossed wire on a harness extention.

Good luck,

JB
