Subject is a 2001 with A/T and 75K miles. Once in a while I will get a message to "Remove key, wait 10 seconds". That always worked to get it started.
Now, message is "service iginition lock" and after a few attempts, I'm on my way. I have been wiping the key clean before inserting but now it appears to be more serious. This is happening randomly and about twice a month.
What type of serice can I perform to eliminate this issue?

You have the column lock issue. Hopefully it is no too late to install the column lock bypass module. Search clb or column lock bypass- it's probably the number one problem.

And you're in the wrong section. Look in the stickys at the top of the tech forum for all you need to know and then some.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Turns out the recall was done 7 years and 50K miles ago but that has now failed and an new harness is being installed for 800 bucks at the local stealership. Sales are down, shop income is up!
