Default Intercooler Question

Anyone ever use a W2A intercooler manifold from twin screw kits like the maggie and KB and build a sheet metal elbow for turbo or SC setups?

Just wondering how big the intercooler plate is to see if there is a possibility in fitting it under the stock corvette hood.

Thanks fellas

The reason I ask is that it could be aesthetically pleasing compared to running more plumbing on a twin turbo setup.

Also this would help on the track as the reservoir could be packed with ice.

I'm just wondering if a setup like this can be made to fit under the stock hood, I know that dragon race supercharger fits under the hood, so I'm wondering if their lower manifold could be retrofitted with a sheetmetal intake on top to fit under the hood aswell.

Any pictures would help as I can't come up with any photos through google.

Thanks!

Let me get this right..

Basically, keep the entire lower manifold, including the I/C, then plumb an elbo off the top where your TB would mount to? Is that correct?

If that is the case, then yes, it would fit under the stock hood, but you would be better off using a traditional A2W intercooler in a remote location. The top mount kits use the largest possible they can, but its still not adequate for optimal cooling.

I could see you using it as a secondary unit, but I wouldnt use it for your primary. I am sure, if the top mount companys could get away with it, they would run one MUCH larger than they currently do.

Now if you have ALOT of room, you could use the lower manifold, but have a much thicker core built. Something like 4+"s. That would work, but I fear it wouldnt be everything that you hoped for.

I have pictures of just about every piece of every top mount kit, so if your dead set, let me know, and ill get it to ya.

The DRE kit fits under a stock hood because they lower the cradle almost a half inch, and they run an EXTREMELY small intercooler. It definately wouldnt work for a full tilt turbo. IMHO.

Jeff that's exactly what I was talking about doing, using the lower manifold + intercooler then with the elbow feeding into the core.

This what they do when retrofitting the Ford GT with turbos, they just use the lower manifold and intercooler with a sheet metal intake hat fabricated for it.

Granted Ford GT's may run a larger intercooler already since they have alot of extra clearence.

Jeff, if you could get me a couple pictures I would greatly appreciate it. I'm also going to PM you

a guy in the UK builds A2W intake manifolds for turbo/centri SC apps.

I have thought about this. Maybe you could use the topmount lower half of the intake manifold, but then with a big think core in there. this works well for the FORD guys but i hear they run 4inch thick A2W cores. you could run a thiker core though cos you could get rid of the SC.

come on TPE get one machined up!

Chris.

I wonder if Jeff could get a larger core made, also I wonder how well the lower manifolds flow.

If you want I have spare supercharger lower intake kicking around that you can jam in probably at least a 3" thick A2W core without restricting runners at all.

Note, you'll have to do your own upper sheet metal work...

Ya I'm prepared about the sheet metal work, I'm concerned about the flow of the lower manifold. What heads is the intake for?

Do you possibly have the dimensions of the core in there now, as I'm trying to search for so w2a cores as we speak.

I'm wondering how big of a core those ford gt tt guys are running because they are laying down some insaaaane hp.

LS1/2/6 port heads... I'll dig up manifold and post dimensions tomorrow. You'll be able to stuff in a generous heat exchanger without any restriction to runners.
