Default high flow cats, longevity?

In high hp applications with meth and a fat air fuel ratio what would be the typical life span of a high flow catalytic converter? Do these things last or is a just a matter of time? Also, what kind of indication should you look for aside for being down on power that they are clogged?

I have had three melt shut. One just after my last engine build and after tunning. I replaced both which lasted about 10 months and then I started hearing a rattling from them and had reduced power. They had both melted shut and seperated from the sides of the pipes. I wish I could find some that would last. I was using Dynotechs.

Why ask one person when I can ask thousands You reported a failed cat after a few years with the limited mileage you put on your car. Any clue why it went bad?

Were all three sets Dynotechs? Did you notice coolant temps slighty higher and/or lack of power?

Are those the same thousands that helped you with your fuel system?

my mileage is about 7000 kms a yr...the heat cycling usually does
the damage...I have had the same cats for about 4 years now...thats almost
30k which aint bad...installing some low mileage replacements next week
if Fernando is available...200 well spent

I am not using the rear O2s?

I have replaced two sets of Dynotech cats.

I did not have overheating issues just the rattling noise coming from the cats. My car runs pretty cool with a Be Cool radiator and stand alone oil and trans coolers.

I've been running Kooks for about 5k hard miles. 2500 has been with FI. Running lean is what usually really kills cats. When I was NA they started making a little noise at 13.0AFR, but they are still holding up for now.

I'm surprised that you're burning cat's up so quickly. I had a maggie for a 20K miles or so and never had any problems.

Sounds like the tune is off.

This is a good thread.

I have a car that came from Houston to Western Canada. Its an SD tune and it hasn't been properly tuned since being here (fuel system issues all summer). My exhaust has started to sound weird over time and I'm starting to think that maybe that cats are clogged, or maybe just one. Vacuum at idle is down and the boost gauge hits boost alot faster now...

I don't really want to replace the cats with more cats that might get bunged up again, however I also don't want to just put straigh pipe through there....I don't think I could handle the noise.

Kooks 1"7/8 headers w/ catted high-flow midsection matched up to Borla Stinger.

I run my car with meth, boost and nos, the cat's are still like new after 4 seasons. A/f ratios in the 9's and 13's for all these years. We all know I lay smashing in my town.

Mine are cooked after 3 years...two years with over 800+ rwhp...you get slower response with boost and lower rwhp numbers...and it was tuned by an great tuner so its on the safe side...I was told that they wouldn't last when there were installed...their kooks high flow cats...

I have been running my KOOKS for two years now BOOSTED and no problems at all

Plenty of fuel keeping temps down and not going "LEAN" (Which really destroys the Caties)! So far so good

Thanks,Matt

I installed my Kooks headers and cats in 2003 ~ 35K and they are still working fine.
Now have a little more then 70K on the car, mostly street use but I still get into boost regularly.

I thougt that running rich killed them? . Aren't the cats running hotter with a rich mixture because the catalyst has to burn the extra fuel? This, combined with the added exhaust heat when in WOT (my Jet Hot extreme coated headers have some coating damage from a dyno session) could cook them.

Arun...straighten out these guys about how many cats you have replaced on customers cars...we are talking about clogged cats not melted cats....I'd rather run rich then too lean....

Hi Bobby, my cats gave up this year on a dyno session. They were Dynotech, which in my opinion are great cats, i know that i was running a little rich due to safety for my stock bottom. After the mods we did this past spring( the car seemed slower on top end). We were on the dyno when we noticed metal flakes out of the exhaust. When we pulled them they were completly clogged. Fixed them and next dyno picked up 140 rwhp. I think with the Meth & the hi horse supercharge combination, only a matter of time.
