I am getting ready to install my ECS blower cam and i am down to getting a mellings oil pump and a timing chain. I am looking at the c5-R timing chain or a double timing chain. Since they are around the same price that is not a concern. Which is a better option? Also spoke to chris at ECS and he said the new mellings oil pumps are not having any clearence issues with the double chains. Any tips?
Stock ls6 has always treated me right. Failures are awfully rare, and you might be able to make a case that they are more rare than the aftermarket doubles.
The LS2 chain is beefier than the LS1/6 chain and cheaper than the other options. So, unless you need something stronger than the LS2 chain, I would just go with that.
If your running any valve springs stronger then the LS2 valve spring I would go for the double roller chain.
GM does not over design anything, the bean counters won't let them!
I did the D/roller chain with the stock cover it will work great, if you just do a little grinding on the inside of it at the key points...
I had similar issues...
Installed a double roller and had to grind the Melling oil pump (from ECS) for clearance.
Then had to grind and mill the timing cover to clear the oil pump (spacers installed.)
Installed the IW 8" balancer and then tried to turn the crank after getting it all together and it wouldn't budge. - had to buy an new oil pump
Balancer had damaged the oil pump cover.
Had to turn down the end of the balancer in the lathe.
Also honed out the inside of the stock balancer - used it as a guide to center up the oil pump.
It's been six months and running ok.
Recommend going the LS2 route if possible.
