The above pics look like a single drill slice went into the side of the snout and the damper at the same time from the side, not top to bottom.
Yes the hole is drilled in crank and damper at same time from front to rear. Round keyway instead of square.
Dave
Ya, that's an interesting approach. Different from ATI Perf's solution. ATI's vertical pin would be stronger, but the above horizontal drilled hole, round into both the crank snout and damper hub is interesting.

What was inserted into the 1" drilled horizontal hole in the above pic? A 1" deep pin? What was the diameter of the hole size drilled into the above?

Plan on ordering the ATI jig tomorrow. Will find out the keyway heights.

Just how stong does it need to be?
Maybe use two holes if one is not strong enough?

I don't see the reason not to use 2 pins on the crank, each 180* off with 2 keyways on the damper. That's what is included in the ATI Perf kit. I don't know if doing 2 pins is harder with the engine in the car, but with it out I can't see why not.

Any reason not to use both pins?

3/16x1inch long pin. So it would have to shear 3/16 hardened key 1 inch long to spin damper. ATI's would have to shear 3/16 hardened pin to spin. Which do you think is stronger?

ATI's is round also?

If so I'll do it myself!

(was gonna do it myself anyway)

3/16" is the width. After talking to them today I confirmed the pin height is 7/8". In any case I ordered the kit and it will be here tomorrow. Will check the rest then.

The major difference is that their pins are vertical pins that use a keyway. Yours is a single drilled hole horizontal into both the damper and crank snout if I see the pic right. You then insert a single dowel pin that has a curved surface contact area. Each piece only contacts 180* of your dowel.

What is your dowel width? Am I interpreting your pictures incorrectly? I'm sure your setup is ez and better than stock, but I think the dual vertical pin, dual keyway ATI is probably stronger.

ATI says they prefer their dowels to protrude about .093" out from the crank and the keyway no more than .100" high on the damper hub. So they are leaving 90% of their vertical dowel pins in the crank! Guess they do that for strength?

ATI will modify your stock damper and add keyways at $40 per keyway x1 or x2. Will letcha know what my local machine shop charges me for 2 keyways 180* opposite each other.

Kit arrived yesterday. Will drill it this weekend. Will follow up with the costs to keyway the damper x2.

Anyone want to give tips on how to control the depth of the hole we drill into the crank? We only want the 7/8" dowel pins to stick out .093" from the crank. Only 10% is supposed to stick out.

Thx!

I think you have it wrong.... the dual 180 key uses a pin that stabs through the crank snout cross wise. So it would be a matter of cutting the pin to size. Pin size would be - Crank width plus .093 added to each side. Savy ?? :)

Interesting to have options here.
I think either way, the hub is not going anywhere if you pin it either way. :yesnod:

hehe. It all depends on your point of reference. With the ATI kit, the jig only lets you drill in 2 spots. Some people only do 1. But, hard to make a mistake there. So, horizontal, vertical.. all depends. Will see if I can take pics when it all goes together. We may put it back together on Thu.. but looks like it'll be sometime this weekend probably..

Can someone post pics of these two options ??
I'd really like to see what this jig looks like.

Isn't there another jig for the fix that was mentioned and link to pics above. The kit where you drill straight into the crank/hub (between them)? I'd like to see that jig if someone has one ??
