Default Dragstrip Prep

I had an A&A Vortech V3 kit installed along with a lightened flywheel and McLeod RST clutch in June. Otherwise, the car has LG Pro Longtubes, B&B Bullet exhaust, and Nitto 555R-II's. Car put down 572/482 on the dyno.

I'm planning on taking it to the local drag track in early September, but I'd like to make sure the car is ready for it...or that "I" am ready for it. What would you guys recommend doing to make sure that I don't have any catastrophic problems? I was thinking replacing the rear shaft with a 300M Hardened Shaft. Otherwise, not sure what else could be done short of replacing the entire transmission or differential.

What do you guys think?

What are the common failures and how do they occur?

What can I do to limit issues on stock parts with these tires and power?

Let's face it, I'm an average driver and don't expect to run 10's. However, I'd like to see what it can do...but I'm also a bit afraid to really hammer through the gears or do a very aggressive launch. At the end of the day, I'd be happy with maybe an 11.4 and driving home in one piece.

Well that's great news, but I'm still worried about breaking something if I go all out for that 10 sec time slip.

Wheel hop is the enemy. Hard to control even w drag radials. I run mtet street bias. Even when they spin they dont wheel hop. I would leave soft either way and shoot for no more than 1.8's for 60 ft.

Roll it out and shift firm but don't bang them and let it mph.
Should be fun!

It should run 130+

Watch out for 135.....they will get very cranky with you.

If you are worried about breaking something then you picked the wrong sport and the wrong car. Try to borrow a CCW drag pack. Drag radials are brutal on parts. Make sure you have the 100 mile towing option with AAA -prior- to your event (I speak from experience).

If you snap the output shaft then you can upgrade later for $300. Some people get away without it, some don't.

At the track I've broken transmissions, clutches, and differentials. All on drag radials. Haven't broken once with an ET Street & I plan to keep it that way.

If it's your first time drag racing or first time racing with this car then take it easy and go slow to start. Also let the car tool off in between passes with the hood open (yeah, Phil, I know I'm a total hypocrite in this department. )

You're right, the rear shaft is one of the 1st things to break. With that power and those tires, you might get your 11.4 and drive it home. If you go 11.5 and the track is like ours, you'll need a rollbar and single layer jacket.

Thanks guys, keep the suggestions coming. I'll check out AAA and see what it might cost for the towing option. It would be nice to have that anyway.

I've run this car multiple times before the supercharger with a best of 12.58@114mph. I'm not interested in a drag pack or anything like that, I just want to see what the car can do with the least amount of breakage.

I've been battling wheel hop, of course. I usually bail out the instant it starts hopping.

Do a poor mans drag pack. Got fronts w the temps still on it just balanced and 16x8 z28 rims w mtet streets. Et wins a race not mph. I run a pretty high pressure so it black tracks but not a dead hook. I was running 1.6 60 ft's w bone stock drive train and a 6 puck clutch.
