Up to this point I've gone the N/A route, but want to give nitrous a try. I recently picked up a dry plate setup using the HSW interface and am planning to work up to a 150 shot.
Relevant info on my combo is: forged rods/pistons, 11.7:1 comp, 0.035 quench, and a 237/248 111+2 LSA cam.
So my question is, given a good tune, can I keep running 91 octane (best I get in midwest), or do I need to switch to E85 (or add meth)?
E85 tuned right is hard to beat, but you need to be aware that the mix may change from winter to summer by 15% and that will affect your tuneup. Most people who run it on their C5's seem to tune their own, or buy it out of a drum to better guarantee the blend is right. The blend changing won't cause any issues cruising around, but WOT can get you in trouble.
I run Oklahoma 100% 91oct and 100% methanol injection in my c6z. 874/782 rear wheel at 12psi/6k rpms before belt slips. Nice to have that kinda power and Cruise where i want without worrying about my next fuel station. And gets good gas mileage.
Thanks for the input braden and blownblue. So is the consensus that I definitely need more octane one way or the other when I spray?
I don't tune personally, so the variability of the e85 is definitely a concern. The couple people I know that run it in the area said they've seen 10% swings in ethanol content in the past year. How much variability have you guys found the computer can compensate for in closed loop mode? If it’s as simple as getting a tune dialed in for the mid level alcohol content and letting the computer sort out the +/- 5% swings, then I’m on board. But if I need to stay within a percent or two, it doesn’t seem very practical since I put over 10k miles on a year.
As for the meth option, I like the idea of not having to worry about ethanol content. Unfortunately it doesn’t seem to be a very popular way to go on nitrous for whatever reason (setup cost maybe?), so there isn't a ton of info to work off of. Looks like I need to spend a couple hours reading up on it.
Or do a stand alone. No way id do e85 on a car id like to road trip in.
Road trips just require some planning, no worse than a Tesla needing a recharge every 200 miles or so (can stretch to 230 but not much after that and ive limped to a charging station before). Ive seen a couple Teslas on the side of the road cause they just didnt quite make it to the next charging station and im more nervous in the Tesla vs when I had my E85 Z when needing go juice. At least with E85 you can still fill up with non E85 and drive it unlike a dead electric vehicle with no plug around.
Ive carried 10 gallons of E85 in truck of my Z06 many times just in case its no biggie doing that on a trip, but ive been stranded in the Tesla before....
And i wouldnt own a Tesla for that reason even though They are wicked cool. To each his own. I can drive cross country tomorrow and require nothing but pants, i guess. Haha
If I can get an E85 tune that's flexible enough to work with the fuel in my area, I wouldn't mind going that route. For road trips I can always plug in hptuners and switch back to a 91 tune and just stay off the juice.
That said, I'm still interested in learning more about mixing nitrous and meth since the fuel would be consistent and I wouldn't have to beef up my fuel system as much.
