I just had Julio rebuild my original last week. The new one from just under 2 years ago started leaking at Thanksgiving. I'm gonna send that one out now.

when I ran an alchy BB chevy at the dig (ron's flying toilet mechanical injection), I had to pickle the system and run pump gas though it
try that with maybe some marvel mystery oil and just use the test button and vent the nozzles to a bucket to pickle the pump before retiring for the winter and it might last longer
I worry about that too, make sure to ask julio about what he might recommend to preserve the system when not being used. best thing to do is keep using it. alchy won't freeze.
Just look at the pump as a wear item in the system. I'm pretty sure no matter what you do, the life span is somewhere around 2-3 yrs. I've done mine both ways (drained, not drained). It's a relatively cheap and easy fix.
