Re: Intercooler for the Mag!!!??? (boblackhardtop)
88-100rwhp gain is rather optimistic, 40-50rwhp is my guess. :)
My guess would have fallen within those parameters as well if I hadn't have read the 14th post down in this thread myself... :yesnod:
...I received a response e-mail directly from Magnuson......"As far as the horsepower, we made 585 at the crank with 400 ft/lbs at 2000 rpm, our particular C5 is an automatic and we did change the rear gears to 3:42's."
The gears would seem to be inconsequential as we are speaking flywheel horsepower and not worth mentioning, however, by adding them to the statement it seems they are including any and all mods to the car in their description. It appears as if it is a stock A4 with the Mag and the intercooler. I agree it does sound extreme, but that was supposedly directly from Magnacharger... I can't be anything but optimistic for now...

I agree with SilverC5inOhio. These numbers came directly from Magnuson. I am assuming the numbers are "so high" because presumably they are turning the boost way up since the intercooling will permit that. I don't know the math, but I would guess that there's a pretty strong correlation between each added PSI and the increase in horsepower. Of course, they are still testing this car, and I'm sure they have to come up with a solution that fits their philosophy, which seems to be not to go too far, and of course to cater to the entire nation, thereby having to take into account climates and who knows what else. Plus, I'm curious as to what their advice will be in terms of the bottom end of an LS1. It seems the ATI guys have had a lot of problems trying to couple a stock bottom end with this kind of horsepower, so I guess there will have to be consideration as to whether this "improved" Magnacharger will raise the same concerns.
Time will tell, and it'll be an exciting ride watching this as it develops. :D
Magnuson took their intercooled S/C test car to the Corvette Caravan for the 50th anniversary to Bowling Green a couple of weeks ago.
I heard it only ran 115 mph in the 1/4, in case you have not noticed they don't talk about their Vette's performance on their website, and that would be a major sales boost if they ran 120+ mph.
This is their sales pitch on their site: "Install our new supercharger system on your LS1 or LS6 Corvette and show Viper, Porsche and Ferrari owners your tail lights!"
Yeah,if you walk them around behind your car and point.
That'd be pretty surprising since my car ran that time on 295 Kumhos, without the intercooling, and presumably at about 100 RWHP less than what they're claiming. Did you hear the times of what other cars were running or what kind of tires the Magna car was using?
They have to run about 8-9lbs intercooled boost to get 585 at the crank. That's really pushing it w/ stock CR, pistons are not gonna last long.
That's probably the top end kit for those w/ forged bottom.
I'm ready for THAT KIT :D :reddevil
Re: Intercooler for the Mag!!!??? (boblackhardtop)
They have to run about 8-9lbs intercooled boost to get 585 at the crank.
OR
Run the right combo of heads, cam, headers, and a pulley, and do it with 6 lbs of non-intercooled boost. Then add the retro fit intercooler to that same package and call it a day. :smash:
will the mag still keep the better power in the low rpms or is it going to be more similar to the ATI?
This is 100% speculation on my part, but since they're planning on being able to retrofit the intercooler to the superchargers that are already out there, then I would think the general roots principle would remain the same, meaning the power down low would stay the same or go up. Total guess on my part. :seeya
The new Magnacharger w/intercooler will list for approx. $6500, I don't know what the retrofit will cost for present owners.
Isn't that about $1,500 more than the non-intercooled version? If so, that doesn't sound too bad for the added performance, and it doesn't seem to include some type of "Corvette tax" as some had feared.
So, Devil Dog, will you be buying one? Come on, maybe the intercooled version will give you some food for thought? :)

After Devil Dog posted the approximate price above (of $6,500), I couldn't stand on my previous commitment to leave them alone for 60 days since they indicated that's about when they'd update their website. So, I inquired again. All I was told was that the price is not yet determined and they are still doing a lot of dyno work to optimize the product. :seeya
