Default Side Exhaust

Has anyone put a side exhaust mod on there C5, like the late 60's 454? Is this even possible, if any one has done it, can I see pics please.

I don't think it's possible given the small tunnel in the center of the car for the exhaust routing. If you went below this height it would be too low. There is no way to route it to the side.

Look closely at the C5-R.. It`s not sidepipes, but the exhaust exits out the side.

Jack up your C5 and you'll see the exhaust is pretty close tolerance in the tunnel. If you weren't driving it on the street, ie the C5R then you could run it out the side or a true side exhaust. I don't want to be negative but I agree with . This is a C5, not a C2 or C3. Just my .02 but it's your Vette.

I appreciate everyone's input, I am not really thinking of doing that. Just wondering if possible, and I was curious to see some pics if available. What about a side molding made for the pipes to exit?

Are there legal issues with sidepipes?

Not enough clearance on the street, even at stock height. Lowered? Forget it. The bottom of the C5 is as flat as a pan - nowhere to route 2.5 to 3inch pipes, unfortunately. I love the exit-in-front-of-the-rear-wheels look (yes, yes, Rice.. so what?) but even with flattened pipes I can't see how it would be physically done and the car still driveable.

Lowered to the max on stock bolts, my car is exactly 4inches from the ground in the middle, 3inches in the front. So 2.5inch pipes with a little clearance between the chassis and the pipes and you're about an inch off the ground.... not good (unless you are ALLKAR )

Remember... Just 4 inches clearance..

Just 4 inches between butt and bitumen
Just 4 inches between a$$ and asphalt
Just 4 inches between tush and tarmac
Just 4 inches between posterior and pavement

And my car is going down another inch...

I would be interested if anyone could pull off this sleight of hand.

EG

Considering how low the car sits and how the exhaust would have to be run, I think doing this would cause all sorts of scraping problems, even when you go over the slightest bump.

On the C5-R they still have to use the frame rails, so they probably run the pipes into the rails right next to the engine bay and keep it inside till the exit points.....or they could come all the way thru and run outside the rails and inside extended rocker rails. On a race car that sees speeds that the C5-R sees, the center tunnel could be used for a venturi tunnel, or simply closed off to create a flatter bottom.

...with all of the above.

Brings to mind my '74 Camaro on which I put "glass-packs" side-exhaust pipes. I'm telling ya, the constant drone after awhile, REALLY got on my nerves. Sounded cool and all, but still the noise. And that was when I was 23.

Worse, it devalued the car when I went to trade it in for a TR7, which is another story completely.

unfortunately the corvette is no longer (and some would argue never was) a muscle car. It's a sporty exotic type and side exhausts well, just dont overly fit into that picture. I too loved the side exhaust and enjoy the viper's attempt at throwing this back yet I just cant see it on a c5.

Default C4 side exhaust

I have side exhaust on my C4 race car. This is not the sytem you can buy out of Ecklers that goes around from the back turns 180 degrees then back down the side. Due to the fact the car is very low we made custom headers that go over the frame rail then under the trim under the door and exit mid-door. The actual exhaust pipes are 18 inch long. It is very loud no mufflers 410 ci displacement, 14:1 compression, big *** cam. So may be able to be done but my mechanic said if he ever made another set of headers like this he would charge $3000 for all the work in them.
