i just bought my C5 and it only came with one key and one fob...
i notice that when i tried to buy a new key that they wanted a VAT code #...
where and how do i find that code?
i dont feel comfortable with just one key and would like to buy another one...
i see that ecklers has keys for $15...that seems cheap compared to the chevy dealer who wants $55...
is ecklers where i should buy a key from?
and what about fobs? they want $125 for one and there is no way that i will spend that for one...
do i have other options?
thanx!
but how do i know that it is compatable with my car and will work?
The vat code is the resistor value of the chip in your key (the small black pellet) they range from 1-15. You can figure this out by either using an Ohm meter or you can find out from the dealership either with your VIN number or by having them take a reading for you.
I am not sure what the vat code is but I think youmay be refering to the key resistance code. I carried mine to my local dealer and they checked the resistance? and cut a new key for 35 dollars. The good thing was I checked the key before leaving to be sure it would work.

just take your key to a local key shop - they should be able to take care of duplicating it for $25 or so. I agree with looking on eBay or posting in C5 Parts for a FOB.
this is really wierd...
chevy dealer could not find my vin and the locksmith came today and said that they could not get a resistance reading from my key...

If the key starts the car (and the ignition system hasn't been altered) then the resister is working and the car is able to read it - and why the chevy dealer can't find the VIN is beyond belief!
Hey you local Fl guys - where can he get a key made close by??
