Default Do the LS1's tend to have a tick at startup?

I put a deposit on a 2000 pewter 6 speed FRC today. The salesman said motor has what he calls a lifter tick when you first start the car but it goes away in just a few seconds and it runs very smooth. Someone said in a post I was reading that some of the LS1's have some valve train noise and that it was normal so can anyone verify this for me? Thanks for any help.

Mine does not and I don't think it is common.......

Could be a lifter ticking or piston slap from having no oil in the engine, its all just sitting in your pan until you start it.
Either way I would have her checked out

Lack of oil up in the lifters is likely it. It has to do with oil getting up there. If it continues take it into the dealer. Mine did it when new and then went away with the first oil change never to return.

He said it only happens for a few seconds at startup.

Vetfver, did yours do it constantly or just at startup when you first got the car?

Piston Slap! no question about it.

my bro got gm to buy back his SS because of this.

Eventually it will kill the engine.

make sure you have certified trusted mechanic look at this.

Sounds like Piston Slap to me.

From what I've gathered since I've had my car, it's fairly common with the LS1 engine.

According to GM, it will cause no long-term damage. But GM, through my dealer, gave me a 100,000 mile warranty on the engine and everything related to it.

I'd still rather have no noises, but at least have some peace of mind.

If it's the "normal" LS1 noise....it goes away after the motor warms a bit. If it doesn't go away after a few minutes.....it's something different.

If it's a "ticking" sound, sounds more like the fact that the lifters aren't pumped full of oil yet. It'll only take a few seconds to build pressure. I've had different engines that reacted to different oil. Many times, a simple oil change to a different oil will cure it.

I think the few people that are calling it piston slap are jumping the gun. Piston slap is a definite problem but I would hardly call it a "ticking" sound and most certainly it won't go away after running for a few seconds/minutes.

Just my .02 worth.

Valve train noise is even more noticble with headers, does the car have stock exhaust manifolds?

piston slap (according to gm) is only able to be heard on warm up, after that the noise will go away. This is why they claim it "doesn't cause any long term problems" .. oh but here's this lengthy extended warranty for free. no longterm problems though.

If possible see if the dealership will contact the former owner and give your phone number so you may ask questions about the car. Such as OIL consumption. They should be thruthful with you since they no longer own the car.

If it goes away after just a few seconds most likely a lifter that isn't pumped up with oil.

YES, the LS1 ingine is known for valve train noise on cold starts, noise lessens as engine comes up to temp, but if you listen close some noise still present. Normal, although not all do it to the same degree.

My 3.4 liter engine in my Montana van has the piston slap which is very typical to this engine. Some days you would swear it's going to self destruct ubtil it warms up. Had it since new, have 111,111 miles on it now, uses no oil, runs strong. I use only Mobil 1 in all my vehicles, this one is my daily driver and it gets changed @ 5.000 mile intervals.

It is normal for a lifter to tick for a few seconds after first start up. If it lasts more than say 5 seconds after a "cold" start up then you may have a problem. This usually is most audible when the car has been sitting for several days and more so in colder weather.

Install a K&N oil filter and your ticking will most likely disappear. This filter has one of the lowest pressure drops out of all the available C5 filters.
