mqqn: spit n' shine method works wonders on the tips! yeah i thought the tips were stainless or chrome too b/c of the spot welds (thinking they were a different material), but i learned you will rarely, if ever, see stainless welded to ti, esp. in a crazy heat environment like an exhaust. different properties, tough to weld, etc. (i think ti has to be welded in a special environment as opposed to steel?) or something like that. i'm not a materials engineer, so i can't speak eloquently on the subject. the ti tips are chromed though, through a plating process called "flash" somethingorother.
i used to have magnaflows on my last c5, and really liked the polished stainless look. i wanted to get that look on the ti system (the pipes and the canisters). the time to get 'em ultra-shiny, the hassle & expense was really not worth it.
i forget where the link i saw that was a gm paper on the exhaust topic. but if ya really want to find out, i can look it up...
Flitz metal polish works great. I have tried several different brands of metal polish & Flitz seems to be the best for me. It's easy to work work with, gives metal a nice shine, supposed to leave a protective film. The shine lasts longer with Flitz. Just curious, has anyone tried the Flitz protective wax?
If you can't wait for the mail order Flitz, most motorcyle shops carry Simichrome or AutoSol, both of which are good metal polishes. I prefer Flitz and also use it around the house.
With so many opinions, I contacted General Motors requesting info on the Titanium exhaust tips. By the way, I did lightly sand scratches out of mine (1000 grit black paper) and buffed with buffing compound on a hand held polishing buffer, look like mirrors.
Here's the reply from GM:
"The exhaust tips for previous year models including 2004 were made out of titanium; however the newer models have steel exhaust tips."
