Took the car to a local dealership to fix some minor issues and fix transmission. Transmission was popping out of gear, reverse gear 50% of the time. Dealership had the car for one month, fixed the reverse gear issue.
200 miles later, odometer now over 36,000 miles (36,300 to be exact) problem with 3rd to 4th shift. Cannot shift from 3rd to 4th, gear grind, under load. Will shift from 3rd to 4th at idle. Can downshift from 5th to 4th. Once downshift from 5th to 4th, the downshift to 3rd feels rough, no hard metal grinding, just a funny feel.
Reading the service ticket for fixing the reverse pop out problem, noticed "fish out broken parts" after removing trans.
The dealship has been responsive and wants to take care of the problem.
What should be my position. Should I push for a replacement transmission or let them fix the 3rd to 4th issue. Are there upgrades that I should ask for if this is a common problem?
Anybody know of recalls/service bulletins on this issue?
I.G Burton in Milford De just replaced my trans, had problem going into 4th gear and would pop out of 2nd gear have GM after market warranty it cost me $100 to have it done>>>

you need to talk to the rep in your area, and have it done under warranty, if they checked it, and it has been under 12K then as my understanding that the dealer is responsible. I know if they replace anything under warranty that it comes with a 12month 12K warranty, well if they said there was nothing wrong well it is there dime for not fixing the issue, I would think, that is just my opinion.
Have the transmission replaced with a new one. Get that Auto transmission fluid out and replace it with Red Line synthetic shock proof light gear oil. I've use it in all my vette transmissions it work great.
hahaha i wish my dealership was nice as your guys my 02 had 7500 miles on it and same problem happened with 3rd and 4th and i had the extended warranty and they said it was my fault which it wasnt, but i thought you buy a warranty for these types of problems. still goin through the whole court thing with the dealership what should i do any suggestions for me it cost me 3600 dollars. sorry to hijack your thread. but this happened to me and i got screwed i did however get a brand new tranny, i was the second owner of the car got it with 2500 miles.
I am glad your dealership is being honerable. A good tranny tech can rebuild any trans and make it new. As this is a warranty issue, when they tear it down, they will be installing everthing new. First they did a repair and your back, it may be a grey area as to the why, but its in your favor not theirs. Because this is a warrantee repair which is paid by GM, when in doubt rip it out. They will make their money on the service and they don't want to see you back. (they have mucho egg in face right now)
Your riquirement is whatever it takes to fix it right, you might get a new tranny by default. Parts plus labor may exceed new unit. Just be nice. More bees with honey than vinager.
Good luck!

Do NOT use the shock proof gear oil. Spec calls for ATF in our tranny's. Use Redline D4.

This has been common on these cars, I repair them all the time and there is a bulletin about the repairs of you current problem. Your 3rd-4th gear synchronizer hub assy keys have broken and they are preventing you from making or cleaning making shifts between 3rd-4th gears. They will or should install updated 3-4 shift fork (steel instead of aluminum) 3rd-4th gear synchronizer hub assy (same part), 4th gear blocker ring and associated friction cones. What happens is the keys in the synchro hub break. . (get a hold of crashed94, Rodney from RPM in IN. he has updated tool steel or billet keys) The original keys are made of a junk sheetmetal stamping. I dont think they will install these under warranty though---- It's a shame they havent figured out the real problem.
Anyway if they are competant, they should be able to repair, otherwise replace and wait for it to happen again.

I feel lucky that my local dealer values his Corvette customers, with my experience I cannot complain.
You may draw more bee's with honey than vinager... but you can throw vinager in their eye's a lot easier than honey!
Is this problem also on 03 Z's or did they get it fixed for 03?
My 02Z had the same problem. I backed out of the garage and heard the tranny break (the sound of metal snapping in your 50K car is not one I wish on anyone). Anyway, long story short, my local dealer replaced all the broken pieces under warranty and it would still not shift once the car got warmed up. They put a brand new transmission in for me and the problem went away
I don't think I'll have a problem getting the dearlership to take care of it since it went in with a reverse gear problem. they disassembled it, put it back together and then the 3rd to 4th gear problem after 200 miles driving. I didn't have a problem with 3 and 4 before they worked on it to fix the reverse gear pop out.
I really want a new tranny because I don't know what else has damage that will surface in the future. I don't beat on the tranny, no power shifting etc. Drive it fast, but not hard.
I have an extened warranty with a $200 deductible if they don't come thru. I may use it because More Perforamance can get me a brand new 04 z06 tranny for $2,200.00. They are going to install one in a friend' s coupe.
Many thanks for your input. This is the best forum of all.
To whom it may concern:
I Called the engineering staff at Red Line. They recommended shock proof gear for my transmissions. I have a 93 ZF six speed and a 02,Z. We also run it in our Mustangs with 408 RWHP. Just to let you know. The NASCAR teams run it in Cup cars and Bush cars. You need check out the types of oils used in factory cars before saying no to high performance products.
For your information the ZF six speeds came from the factory with 10W30 motor oil can you beleave that. The z06 came with ATF.
I went by BSR Products in Mooreville, NC today an picked up six quarts of shock proof for my Z.

I don't disagree at all. I use Redline D4. I honestly can't remember, but when I researched different trans fluid, I read a couple of threads that stated it wasn't recommended, D4 was. Maybe I was wrong? Can't seem to find any on the search on this board. If so, my apologies.
