Default *** DIY - Installing Catback Exhaust Systems ***

: INSTALLING AFTER CAT MUFFLERS :

You guys have to stop giving the stealerships money. Or just donate the funds to me if you want to throw it away!

Catbacks is one of the easier mods - ALL the hard work is trying to get the d@mned car into the air, IMHO!!

This write up is for Borla Stingers but it applies to any aftermarket catback system.

Time taken? Once it's airborne, it takes less than 30 minutes to swap the mufflers - see pix.

EG

1. Block the front tires.

2. Jack the rear of the car up and put it on jackstands.

3. Remove the Sway bar (2 bolts/2 nuts) and pulled it down and out of the way.

4. Unbolt both pipes at the flanges and loosen the bolts holding the stock mufflers to the frame.

5. Cut the rear mufflers off right over the rear sway bar with a sawzall.

6. Remove stock mufflers.

7. Put the Borla over-axle pipe in one side at a time, then install the Stingers.

8. Tighten up everything to line things up.

9. Put the sway bar back and tighten up.

PIX

1. The hard part - getting it airborne

2. Stock system out in 5 minutes. Note swaybar swung down out of the way.

3. Note Sawzall. I cut out the passenger side stock exhaust - 2 minutes.

4. Big difference in size and weight (and sound) between Borla Stingers 2 Tip and stock exhaust. Note DV camcorder (far right) to record the momentous occassion.

5. All done. Elasped time 1 hour 22 minutes. Most of that time was spent jacking, then finding the correct sized sockets and spanners and taking pictures.

6. Now - to annoy the neighbors!!

EG, is that the rubber mount still on the muffler in pic 2?? I was afraid to unbolt those in fear of losing the bolt in the frame when re-installing the nut. I do agree tho, it ie an easy DIY. If I ever do it again, I will back the **** end over the wall at my Dad's house and do it standing up!!

Very Nice write up, it just seems like it is to easy. There is no welding or anything? Have any sound clips.

there was not welding with the GHLs. The came in as 3 seperate pieces and were attached with clamps.

It looks like the Borlas have the same set up. You do need to get the rear end high to get the stock exhaust out so if you are not sure aabout safety I would suggest cutting the stock exhaust then it easily pulls out.

I took the whole unit down like EG including the Rubber Hanger. How did you manage to get the stock exhaust out without removing the hanger?

and yes a large wall where you can hang the backend off of would be great. Probably much more safe too....

Is there any problems with swinging the sway bar out of the way? No possible alignment problems?

No welding, all bolt on with clamps. No special tools either. Nice and easy mod and the difference in sound from stock is unbelieveable.

Sound Clips below. Please Save As and play them locally - if you stream it will take forever. QuickTime movies.

No, because you are not moving any suspension parts. No change in geometry.

You are lucky that camcorder did not record your mellon getting crushed.

Much safer on a lift....if you dont have one offer a local shop owner $20 and ask to use after close.
Nice job I am sure you love the sound

I've had cars on jackstands all my adult life and I haven't had one slip or fall yet. Take your time and place them carefully and you'll be fine. Also note the jack is under tension as an added safety measure.

Why is everyone so afraid of jacking up their car? It's just a car, like any other car - just prettier

I didn't take any pictures (as I was afraid of it falling ) but I just did mine last night in about 1.5 hrs .. it took me longer than it should have, hardest part was jacking up the car. One 4x4 block and a 2 x 4 block and a jack fully extended and it just barely came out.

i'd like to thank everyone who has contributed any information to installing exhaust systems on c5s.

btw. Borla Straights ... they just simply kick @ss. (pics & video to follow once my camera is fully charged)

Weasel...I just unbolted the front flange, twisted it a little and pushed the tab out!!! Did just the opposite to get the Ti's back in. How did you get the nuts to catch without pushing the bolts uo in the frame?? I was I would lose them forever!!!
