hey guys this is my dads screen name but on my wrx forum i talk on there is a argument on corvettes and i figured you guys would know and since my dad isnt home i figured i would ask you...i had thought that the only notchback c5 vette was a z06, but they are saying that you could order a notchback corvette non zo6, i thought all regular vettes were either hatchback or convertible? am i right or am i wrong? thank you and by the way i think its fair to say that i love everyones car on this forum the vette is one of my favorites if not the favorite
Between 99 and 00, there was a lightweight "notchback" C5 offered or FRC "fixed roof coupe" that had all the same engine components as the standard coupe but was lighter and offered less standards in order to save weight. It was intented to be a cheaper vette to sort of fill in the gap left by the Camaro but no one liked the idea so in 01 the Z06 came out with a 385 hp engine, a more track tuned suspension and the fixed notchback roof. In 02, the horsepower was upgraded to 405 hp.
When you say notchback do you mean hardtop? If so then you could get a hardtop in 1999 and 2000. After 2000 the only hardtop is the ZO6. Here's a picture of mine. 2000 Fixed Roof Coupe.
They are correct, the notch-back was originally offered as a Fixed Roof Coupe (FRC). It was available before the ZO6 came out. Chevy brought it out as a inexpensive option for people who wanted Corvettes, was meant to be an entry level vette.
The ZO6 used the same style when they came out.
If you do a search for FRC's you'll find a thread that speaks to when they were offered and such!
so if the above answers are not confusing enough, i'll say it this way. your right. and so are they. sort of.
only in '99 and '00 could you get a vette that was FRC (notchback). it was essentially just a regular vette that had a fixed roof and limited options. since there was no Z06 option at that time, your buddies are right but only referring to the '99-00 model year.
as of '01 all Z06's were notchback and all notchbacks were Z06's. so you win that end of the bet. as of '01 model year you could not get a 'regular' vette with FRC. likewise, you couldn't get a Z06 in coupe or convertible.
BTW, I/M me privately. i have a WRX question for you.
oh ok, thanks a lot for the great info, it really helped a lot. so essentially the 99 and 00 models would be great cars for a zo6 lookalike, just add the vents and wheels right badges and you could fool some people. i love the look of the notchback looks great, but ofcoarse every vette does IMO thanks again for the good responses. seems like you guys have a really nice forum here. thanks

This is a big NO! NO!, You can add the vents and wheels, but you had better not add the badges, you will get eaten alive on this forum for doing something like that!
I get asked all the time if my vette is a ZO6, easy answer for me, "No, it's a lot faster than a ZO6!".
When you really get down to it, the ZO6 copied the FRC! They just added a couple of pieces of plastic (brake ducts and vents and some badges) and of course a higher compression motor with chinsy pistons and called it the ZO6.
i didnt mean it was a good idea i just sai itd be easy, i wouldnt do it thats like old lemans drivers who try to turn it into a GTO its not the real thing and loses its appeal and then some, i just meant it would be easy.
