Blinder M20 is the best laser jammer. You should also get a bottle of Veil which reduces a cop's ability to get a reading on your car with laser by almost 50% if you have a dark colored car.

I drive behind such people all the time. Typically, they save energy by not using their turn signals either. Most use the mirrors for grooming only.

Oh, I drive behind 'em too. I was just referring to us 'Vette pilots. As for regular "civilians", driving is totally secondary to chatting on the phone, women farding in their mirror, reading the newspaper, taking notes whilst listening to Books on Tape, chowing down on a breakfast bagel and washing it down with a Starbucks latte~, and on and on and on...

 

Jeepers...alot of people! They never see what is happening around or behind them, because they are only focused on where they are going.

I was not talking about an occasional glance at the mirrors, I am talking about regular disciplined usage of the mirrors which many drivers do not do. I do not assume that I am the only one to do this, just reccomending it to those who don't maintain situational awareness.

It never does put a false sense of security. It's a tool to detect some speed enforcement methods, not to reduce the effectiveness of the speed enforcement.

It's a passive device and I'm always aware of its abilities and disabilities. And to those who seek "protection" under a radar detector, remember this: it's not a magic wand.

And in this world of detecting speed enforcement methods, redundancy is never enough.

 

Most of the time I set the cruise at 10 mph above speed limit without any problems.I have a V1 w/hidden remote I mounted in the ashtray that doesn't get used.The main unit is mounted high up on the driver's side windshield close to the pillar,so a cop won't notice it unless he sticks his head all the way in the car. I plan on installing a laser jamming system from Escort or K40 next.Anything to avoid a ticket,I have a clean lic. and plan on keeping it that way.

 

Just like everyone says...don't relie on it, but it helps on the streets and mountains, not the freeways.

I have a V1 and I'm glad to have it in the mountains.

 

I find my 8500 helpful when I want to get ahead of some bad drivers.

I suppose a radar detector could give you a false sense of security.

It has been my experience that by the time a radar detector "detects", it's probably too late. In addition, just knowing that there is "radar in the air" is not enough information.

I can already hear the incoming "Well my detector detects police from seven miles away yadda yadda etc." I have no quarrell with that, but it has not been my experience.

I use a CB radio, and not only do in know where law enforcement has set up radar, I also know when they are just sitting and watching without radar...Or where they already have a car pulled over, or where there is a traffic jam, or where there is a piece of retread tire laying in the road, or where there are deer running across the road - and on and on.

As with any venture, effective driver management entails gathering as much pertinent information as possible -

I like to think of radar detection as a small additive device to compliment a CB radio.

I will add that on a rural highway, where there is very little truck traffic, a radar detector is really your only choice.

I am a traffic cop and have a V1 in my Vette... 'nuff said

Radar detectors are good for in town use. You will pick up the signal when the cop blips cars ahead of you, you are detecting the overflow of the signal. A good detector should give you 1 to 2 miles warning, so you can back off in time. Here in California you will rarely find CHP using radar on crowded freeway during commute times. They are just to busy with accidents, etc. Pacing and visual speed estimation are valid for writing tickets, be aware and use those mirrors. On non-crowded freeways and rural roads and mountains the detector will save you many times. The new V1 has POP protection too.

For laser, rare but more departments going to them, is hard to beat without a jammer. V1 is the next best defense for laser, you may get some warning if they blip a car in front of you. Keep in mind the effective range of laser is only 1000 feet and the cop must be stationary and be looking directly at your car with the laser. My advice is not to be the lead car.

 

I've heard it is very difficult to hit a vette with laser? I don't run a front plate and was told they have to hit a flat metal surface. How much more difficult is it?

 

These are all good writeups! I like the idea of having a jammer and the one guy who has a cb. Deffiantly use your mirrors, especialy when passing entrance ramps!
Try not to be the lead car..find a rabbit and follow tail. One thing though.. on long comutes between states, know which states RD's are legal or not.. the leo can dectect your dectector and if your not supposed to have it.. :o

 

And that would be where the Escort ZR-3 Laser Shifter comes in. Absolutely errors out LIDAR guns on every encounter - and believe me, I've put myself in a number of encounters where the guy wanted it to lock up on me so bad he shot me all the way to him and then turned around and shot at the back of my car for another 2500+ feet beyond him. LIDAR (commonly referred to as LASER) is very unfair - it allows the officer to pick a car out of a crowd absolutely. So say, the officer hates Corvettes, Porsches, BMWs, or whatever: when he sees one, he can pinpoint it. You could be traveling the speed of traffic - which is usually speeding - but you're busted because he decided to pick you out of the crowd. And thus, blank the bastards out. It's quite entertaining to drive by laughing while officer oger looks very puzzled at his high-tech display showing an error.

 

The Vette has less of a profile than other cars. Typically we are trained to target the front license plate and headlamps because they reflect the laser very well. Hence the vette with no plate and pop up lights is a more difficult target. The lighter color of the car the better it reflects laser also. The most difficult car to target would be a black vette with no plate and headlamps down. But it is not impossible...the windshield reflects very well, still harder on a vette due to the angle, but doable.
