The modern tire has directional tread to channel water away from the contact patch. As far as DRY performance is concerned, you can mount them backward with no penalty....they will work just as well.
I posed this very question in the Wheel & Tire forum and Luke (from the Tire Rack) verified this.

Now, mount a tire backwards and do multiple burnouts with it and you may experience rubber separation where the overlap/splice is. But normal, dry use is not a problem.

I have approx. 18K on my Goodyear GS-D3 tires. A few weeks ago I did some measurements, and the rears were down 3/32nds from original thead depth; fronts were down 2/32nd from original tread depths. They sure do wear a heck of a lot better than I would have thought when I purchased them.

Like somebody else already said, mileage on tires will fall all over the board. I have just over 33,000 on my 02 Z as of today, replaced the fronts two weeks ago at 32,500 miles. The rears, really big surprise.... I estimate another 5 - 7000 miles of tread life remaining. I drive it hard sometimes, but not everytime I get in the car.
As George Burns once said about people with too many children, " I like a good cigar as well as the next guy, but I take it out of my mouth once in a while."
