I've missed a shift or two in my day and luckily nothing bad ever happened to the motor or drive train. Just a bruised ego. But getting the dealer to repair the damage (or at least expecting them too) is not something I'd care to speak publicly about.

Good luck

If you think you can abuse a car and get it repaired under warranty every time...... You are in for a big surprise some day. A missed shift is not covered under warranty unless you can prove the design is at fault or other mechanicals caused the missed shift.
And we understand what you are saying if you are saying it correctly. Communications is a two way street. You started this thread asking for advice, or was it just bragging that your dad can screw up his car by making a mistake and getting GM to foot the bill?
I don't know you but I will say this, tread lightly. Don't start insulting the folks on this board because you don't like the feedback you get from your own post. You asked us into this....grow up.
My dad is not a horrible driver and nor does he need to go to driving school tos hift on a stragiht drag strip, he always nails forth fine, you just unshift let it go to center and pull it back, he never let the clutch out fully nor did it over rev, you guys are not understanding me clearly. Also, there is no way pushrods could have done this without floating the valves. Plus there is not clanking noise. The mechanic says its fine but my guess is the clutch is toast. You guys can not all sit here and tell me that you all have not gotten a bit hairy in your cars nor have you ever made a mistake. Dont act like you guys are perfect
Your inexperience is on display for all. Many of the previous posts offer good advice, don't take it personally. To write that there is no way pushrods could be bent without floating the valves demonstrates a lack of understanding (I'm trying to be kind here) of how the engine works. I'm wondering if the mechanic even checked. Also, it would be unusual to damage the clutch in the incident that you describe. Finally, most of us on this forum could use a good high performance driving school. I've been to two and still have a lot to learn.
Maybe its more than the 04's not sure. I will let him know bout the pushrods, never thought of that since they bash pushrod v8s these days
So you think 04s are bad cars because your father couldn't shift for his life? Time to sell the Z and buy a coupe with an auto. Then put it in "D". BTW - saying he didn't depress the clutch all the way or he 'usually' can shift into fourth is the same as saying he can barely operate the linkage. He was using totally improper shift and clutch technique, and he sure as hell needs a proper driving school immediately, and you had better go along to see just how much you don't know. Notice I said driving school, not racing school. You first must understand how the basics of the car and operating work before you can race the car.
Also - if valve float occurs, it is not always readily apparent. Do you know what valve float is? How does it affect the valve springs? The pushrods? The lifters? How can it affect the pistons? The heads? Time to listen to those who know a lot more than you do. Humble pie coming up!
Don't take offense to the Driving School comment. I thought I was a pretty darn good driver. But with an instructor sitting next to you for 25 min sessions, they will be able to point out some minor bad habits to make you better. I wasn't having a problem shifting but one instructor pointed out that I was holding the shifter wrong and recommended changing. Being hard-headed I didn't listen at first and hit the shift gate between 2nd and 4th and it wouldn't go into gear. Thankfully didn't go into 2nd. I started shifting as he recommended (basically open-handed) and have had no more problems. Driving school has been the best mod to the Z so far.
Gotta love the flaming involved, and trust me its not the pushrods. Basically the mechanic believes there is nothing wrong. I brought this on for opinions not flames. When everyone is trying to shove in my face what they know is right and just to burn my dad for a mistake. I know warranty wont cover it every time but this time it did. I guess this is just a place to get flamed for expressing an opinion of your own. Salutations...
This situation certainly sucks. But it certainly illustrates the importance of proper shift method. Hitting the right gears should be an easy thing but then again so is walking up the steps in your house, but every once in a while you trip on a step I've only been driving my first Z for a little over three months and shifting has been one of my biggest struggles while driving the car. I have no problems 1st to 4th. But to 5th I'm always worried about hitting reverse. Is there a safety that prevents this. Downshifting from the high gears is touchy for me as well, but on the highway it's easy to recognize that you've hit the wrong gear and push the clutch it to recover before damage is done. Especially when you're as nervous about shifting into and out of those high gears as I am.
Anyway shiningthevette15, I'm glad GM is fixing it for y'all and I didn't mean to hijack your thread with my question.
Ranger cracks me up! He's right though - any comment other than "You're the bestest, and your dad can beat up everyone else's dad" and the accusation of being 'flamed' is thrown out there. Sometimes the truth hurts son!

There really wouldn't be any flaming if you did not come on a public forum and basically state that your Dad missed a shift, broke his car and had GM cover it under warranty. It rubs the honest people out here the wrong way. It' s time to grow up and understand that you are only as good as your word and that you should live up to your own mistakes.

I’m 59 yrs. old. I have a 02, Z and love it. I have owned vettes for the past 30 yrs. At the present time I have 4. Getting to the point of performance driving, the video that came with the Z06 plainly states that it came from the factory ”race ready right out of the box”. If it breaks when I’m putting it through its’ passes wild under warranty, I expect GM to fix that race car they sold me. I will be going to the drag strip, as soon as it opens and racing my Z. If any part of it breaks while racing it I will be having this race car repaired under warranty.
