When I first bought my '98 Mn6 vert the steering locked up on it about a week later. I had it fixed at a dealer. About a month later the recall was issued.
I keep getting recall notices but have yet to take it in to GM to be fixed. I am also greatly annoyed at GM because they wouldn't reimburse me for the repairs the dealer completed the first time the column locked up.
I keep reading about this CLB on the forum and how that should be used instead of the GM recall. What is the CLB? How does it work? Why is this better then the recall? I just want to figure out what I should do to my car to make sure it doesn't lock up on me again.
Thanks.

The only way you can insure that your column will never lock again, is to install the CLB. With the recall fix, it is certainly possible for your column to lock-up again. Many Forum members have had this happen to them. The CLB "bypasses" the column actuator that locks and unlocks the steering wheel. With a CLB installed, your steering wheel won't lock when the car is turned off. The CLB was my first mod when I bought my 1999 coupe brand new. I didn't want to take a chance on getting stranded somewhere because of this problem.
Remember. The recall does NOTHING to prevent column lock problems on the MN6......if you have time 'the sticky' has everything you would ever want to know about the nightmare called 'service column lock'....
Just a slight word of caution. A small percentage of early C5's ('97-'98) experienced wacky DIC readings and other problems after installing their CLB's. In some cases the problems were so severe, they had to remove their CLB. To me, it's still worth the chance (to install one) as opposed to having your steering wheel lock up. This, ofcourse, applies only to 6 speeds, as the A4 recall can be fixed by the dealer so the steering wheel will never lock again.
