Default Explain this one

I just got my car back from the dealership for some warranty work that I had done. When I took the car in on Wednesday of this week, my Odometer reading was at around 34,090 miles. When I get into the car toda at the dealership I look down at the odometer and see that it has 31,024 miles on it. I take a look at my paperwork and sure enough the milage in is at 34,094. I tried changing settings and hitting the reset button, but no matter what I do the milage is in the 31,000 mile range. The part that really makes me wonder though is, when I look at the paperwork it shows the last time that I brought the car in for service work, and it just so happens that it was in January of this year and the car had 31,020 miles on it. What do you guys think I don't know if I should say something, or if I just got a free extended Warranty :o

Does anyone have any idea of how this happened? Can the computer just change the milage?

I have a feeling someone took your vette for an extended joyride and then changed the mileage. Its not easy to do but it can be done. If I were you, I'd b*tch to high heaven that they tampered with your vette. You have the proof.

I would want to know how it could happen and why. That could be way more valuable to you than a scam on the extended warranty. Please post what you elect to do and what the dealership says if you go that route.

Its also a federal crime to tamper with an odometer. I think the dealership will try to appease you once you mention that little fact.

I want to know how you can change it?

Is the mileage stored in the cluster portion of the car. My father had a bmw that the cluster had to be replaced and when they put the new one in it read 000000. The mileage was stored in the cluster rather than the computer.

Is the vette the same?

Nail the bastards. The mileage CAN be changed, and you can only guess why they changed it.
Mention it to the owner of the dealership nicely once and demand an explanation. If that doesn't work, report 'em.

You defiantly need to approach them about this and let them know you are aware of the change and demand to know why it was done!

There was a thread before on how to do this. Someone got a new guage cluster and had to replace the OD mileage. Unfortunately, the search feature is still not working properly so maybe someone will chime in on how its done.

There is probably a valid, logical reason and if you bring it up, all that is certain to happen is that your mileage will get changed to 34,000 something. I would drive it for a few weeks and if no problems arise, be grateful for the extra warranty, something always goes wrong shortly after the warranty is schedule to expire.

I'd definitely mention it to the dealership. They should have to explain why the mileage changed by over 3000 miles. Let us know what they say.

Amongst the things I had done was replacing the existing insturment cluster. It had a dim portion on the gauges and the lights would periodically go out so they changed it. I guess that goes along with someone else's post, and they had to reenter the milage.

Exactly what I was thinking, they probably used the last RO for the mileage instead of the mileage at this visit. Happens quite frequently, especially when the mileage in undertimined.

I wouldn't worry about it, maybe call and verify it but don't loose any sleep over it.
