Default Corvette driver age limit?

Lately, I have seen more young people joining the Corvette forum, and a couple of kids driving Corvettes around town. I have read on the forum that some people believe that younger kids should not get a 'Vette because they will wrap themselves around a tree, while others encourage them to join the family. Do you believe that there should be a certain age that kids should be able to get a 'Vette, or do you think that what you do with your car should be your responsibility?

P.S.- I would like everyone to know that I am not trying to start a war or recieve any criticism, I am just trying to see what people think about this subject.

Well i blame thier parents, what kid can afford a corvette and pay the insurance. I would not let any kid drive one (without me in it). Also what age are you calling "KID", Under 21? 20 to 25? If i could have afforded one at 25 i would have bought one in a heartbeat.

Absolutely! The limit should be 15 to 115.

Absolutly not. I feel the Corvette is a much more predictable and much more controlable car than the Firebird/Camaro/Mustan. Think about it, it's the same hp in a car without active handling. The vette is a great car for young people, modding the vette should be up to their parents supervision. But a stock vette is only a 13 second car, and one of the safest on the roads. Look at Dan's vette. no seatbelt and he walked away from an 80mph head on collision, try to do that in a mustang or "teenager car"

Just as i did, working in a restaurant, i was able to easily afford my vette at the age of 17.

hey, has the bandwagon going to beat the dead horse left yet?

when i borrowed the keys to my dad's vette ('00) when i was 19ish i was not old enough to handle the power. ~350hp can make a responsible young man, not so responsible.

then, and the grand old age of 25, i bought my vette.... i think i'm responsible now, but maybe it's just that i've only had one summer and have avoided dumbness.

<note: no, i did not have the 'rent's buy/help out with the car. i got an engineering degree and a grown up job>

I want to make sure I understand your question. Are you asking if we believe that some government entity should pass a law prohibiting the driving of Vettes (and probably other vehicles with similar characteristics) by persons below a certain age?...or are you asking what age limit we might set if put in the position of parent or guardian of a young person who would like to drive a Vette?

I wonder what you mean by "kids". If you mean people under the age of 18, then I think that decision will have to be made by the parent or guardian, taking into account all relevant factors...maturity, responsibility, driving record; however, I think most teenagers would not qualify for the privilege of driving a Vette. I know I would have wrapped it around a tree.

If you were suggesting the passage of a law...let me know. Only then will I open that giant legal can of worms. Too much typing if not what you intended.

We have bigger problems in this country, that need our attention. Rather than continue on with the lecture, I'll excuse myself and get a cup of coffee.

While I don't believe there should be a formal law or restriction, I don't think it should be encouraged...after all, part of the reason our insurance rates are good is because of a low accident history of it's drivers.

When it comes time for me to be a parent...my kids won't be driving Corvettes...no matter how much money I may have...they'll drive something a lot tamer until they can afford to buy their own. And I don't mean just the payments...the whole deal...gas, insurance, maintenance...

It depends on the kid. I had a Camero when I was 16 and never did anything too stupid with it - never wrecked or anything like that. I also know of two other people my age that had a Camero and a Mustang GT - they both wrecked thier cars!
I am 25 now and looking for my first Vette, and still have people tell me it is not a wise purchase. I say, if you can afford it, will take care of it and be responsible - Why not.
