I currently have a 2004 C5 (A4 w/2.73 gear). My first mod was the Vortex intake system. Now I'm looking at doing an gear change. I called DTE and they still don't have the 3.73 back in stock yet.
Is there a big difference between the 3.73 & 3.90?
First, I'm far from a pro here, but I think the first question you want to ask yourself is what are you wanting to do with this car. If you are taking it to the Drag Strip on the weekend and letting it sit during the week, got with the 3.90 gears.
I also have a C4 and I just can't imagine putting anything lower than the 3.42 gears in it for a daily driver, but then again I enjoy the gas mileage I'm getting with the 2.73 gears.
without a clutch to help manage traction; the A4 then restricts you to using throttle management alone - to stop the tires from spinning.
With the 3.73 (even with the stock TC)... you'll be able to peel rubber at will. It sounds and looks super cool; but if you aren't on top of the throttle management game, your 1/4 miles times may be worse than before
