Does anybody know how to get the smell of cologne out of carpet. I picked up my business partner at the airport with my new (1500 miles on it) Z06 a couple of weeks ago and as he got in I was thinking "man, did you take a bath in cologne". Come to find out the airline had broken his bottle of English Leather, it drained down into the carpet in the back well.....and now the carpets are out of the back of the car.
I tried all of the following:
vinegar - no help
baking soda - nada
dishwashing liquid - removed some, but not much
a commercial smell remover called "Odor Blaster"(which seemed to help a little bit)
Overall, a bit better, but it still is really pungent. Right now they are in bags with a stuff that is charcoal based that is supposed to remove the smell by absorbing it into the charcoal....."Natures Sponge" it is called.... Not sure how that will work, if it does I'll let you know....
With the carpets out the smell is gone from the car (at least that much is cool, but not only is it unsightly, but without the carpet in the back it is noisy as all get out...
Years ago when I was a kid I hung out at body shops in NYC. They had all sorts of cars coming in with smelly trunks. Don't ask! They used to put a little bit of lacquer thinner on a rag and closed the trunk for a day or so. CAUTION Just be aware of the spontaneous combustion and/or flammability (sp) possibility. Hep
I need to deodorize. I just put the Lloyd's black rubber mats in my car...it smells like the Michelin Man died in there. Been that way for two weeks. uuuugh!
Try some charcoal briquettes ...I had a problem almost the same and I took some charcoal and wrapped it in tissues. Leave it in the affected area for a few days and see if that helps. It may take quite a few days to get rid of the odor. Hope you have luck with it!
If you have the carpets out of the car, rent a good carpet cleaning maciine. Use lots of water, extract the crap out of it and let them dry in the sun or a warm dry place. Just make sure the carpet backing and insulation do not get too wet.
Long time ago there was a product called Nilodor. I wonder if it's still sold. I came in a little 2 oz bottle. Powerful stuff but it would get rid of any kind of smell. To bad it happened. I guess you friend trashed the bag.
most big car detail places SHOULD have an ionizer type thing that they use to get odors out of cars. I would tell you to talk to them about one of those. They leave it in the car and it takes all of the smelly out of the air. They use the bigger version of it in apartments when they are cleaning them up and repainting for the next tenant. If you leave it in there for a day or so it makes the apartment smell like nothing even tho it was recently completely painted. HOPEFULLY it won't take that long for a car. Keep us posted and good luck!
Actually the bag cleaned up fine and he didn't have trash it......
The charcoal based smell remover did a pretty good job on the deck carpet, I had washed that about three times. I will go out and try to wash the back wall piece one more time. According to what I was able to find elsewhere there is oil in cologne and until you get that out you won't get the smell out.... Makin progress, but I wonder out loud what a new set of carpets woulda cost.....
