That mod got really popular after the release of the Honda S2000. It is pretty simple installation. I have not done it to my C5 but had it in my Nissan Hardbody 3 years ago...it was cool.

i think it is kind of dangerous. what if you are near the car so the fob recognizes you but someone in the car hits the button, will someone get hurt???? i know that there are clutch interlocks and auto shift requirements but if there is a way for something to happen, it will.

If someone drives the car someone might get hurt. If someone runs on wet tile someone might get hurt. If someone takes a shower someone might get hurt.
But to answer your question...a properly installed push to start button only works with the key in the run position.

Until the '50's almost every car made started with a button. Key starters are new school for me and most guys over 50.
I like the button on the C6, but that's about all I like about it!

Yeah, that's pretty modern stuff... my '30 Model-A Ford coupe I had as a kid started the same way. Sheesh!
But hey, whatever turns your crank.

You might hang out in C6 General for a while and see what the folks over there think. The few thread I read there, the push button starter in the C6 received mixed reviews.

Sounds like a cool mod, but if you have to have the key in the on position, might as well just use the key for the whole process. Now if you could get it to work like the C6 one....

No, no, no....
The modification needs to disable the "ignition" switch portion.
The key simply disables any secruity features (like the column lock).
Then you install a toggle switch to close the circuit.
Then the button to start the engine.
Kind of like this:

After you get the push button starter installed, Move the gearshift to the steering column or add a looonnng throw stick with a non-syncronized tranny and maybe look for some neat wooden spoke wheels Sheech!

Then see if yours works the same way.
Then, if it doesn't, see how it could.
Then go back up this thread and read it again.
Then, think about all the problems the C6 crowd (and the XLR folks) are having with their fancy key fob starters.
Then, well, then put in that "wooden paddle" starter button.
No worries mate, your car won't start without you in it, which, if things are right as rain, is how the good Lord intended it all to be.
Cheerio!

By the way ---
... since it's Easter.
A starter button is kind of like lamb -- doesn't quite taste like beef, tastes like mutton, but when 'tis the season, so, somehow, it just seems right.
Same thing wiht a starter button -- there's a reason why airplanes and all high performance machinery gets started this way.
So, my suggestion -- pass the mint jelly.
