Default ? Cleartastic Paint protection

Just wondering if anyone is using the 14 piece set of Cleartastic for paint protection?

Is it worth getting? I'm curious to know if it's a problem getting the cleartastic clean if it gets dirty.

If anyone has pics of what it looks like on a car please post I'd like to get a better idea of what it looks like on a car.

You can pull these on or off anytime?

Thanks for any advice/info

Jeff

I just bought a pair that will go in the area where the Z06 has rear brake scoops in the rear rocker area. I heard that is an area that often gets chipped.

I haven't installed them yet and only scanned the instructions but I seem to recall seeing where they can be removed for car shows etc.

From what I've read about installation so far, I don't think I'd want to be putting them on and taking them off too often. sooner or later you're going to get dirt stuck to the underside of them that you'll probably play hell trying to get off.

OTOH, I expect cleaning the exposed surface will be no problem.

I've also heard that they tend to yellow over time. Fortunately my paint is Millenium yellow so I doubt in the lower rocker location any discoloration, if it happens, will be pretty hard to detect.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

Maybe I'll get time to install them this weekend. Then I can let you know more.

Default clear 3M palstic for z06

I would like to protect the lower section of my z06. I have not been able to find a "3M" cleartastic protection for my car. Where did you get yours from?

thanks,
John

From a site sponsor, Eckler's. Part No. 39733.

Interestingly, looking at the invoice it says "Cleartastic, Rr C5 Flares, 97-04 exc Z06"

Me thinks if you pulled the Z06 intake duct, put the material in place then used a knife to cut the center out and replace the ducts, it would work. But that's only a guess.

I've used them for years and think they are great. Some may say in the install is difficult but if you follow the directions they work great. First time will take a little longer and after that they go on like a breeze. Get them directly from Cleartastic.(www.cleartastic.com) Ed is the best!

Default No luck

You will here many pros and cons. I followed the directions to the letter. I installed them for a trip I was taking to New Orleans. On the way down I encountered some stiff head winds. I lost one. On the way back I got caught in two thunderstorms, There I lost four more. In a 2000 mi trip Five pieces were gone. From what I have read the 3M equilivent is the way to go. The cleartastic rep should be writing a post pretty soon explaining how I didn't know what I was doing. Any time someone disses Cleartastic he usually does. If your going to invest in anything for a trip, get the bra from GM. Worth the money

i've used them for years on my show car and have nothing but good things to say. they have protected my car from various nicks and abrasions that are apparent on the cleartastics. since they are so cheap compared to other coatings and are static cling versus glued on, if they get to dirty where they can't be cleaned anymore, I replace them with a new set. you can see them on my car if you go into my photo gallary. Ed is also a nice guy and if you have problems either with his product or the install he will help you all the way. wcj just a few more words about the product: 3m is not "cleartastic". 3m is glue on and cleartastic is static cling. as to the idea that you will hear from a cleartastic when someone has a problem with the product, well i'm not a rep for the company just a satisfied user along with many others that can attest to the fact that if they are applied properly, they certainly do not come off in a "strong wind" and they will not come off in the rain. you have to let them dry approximately 24 hours after the install so that the soapy water solution dries out and the static cling takes over. you have to also make sure that all the ends where the product meets the body of the car are flat to the body so that water can't get under them. if applied rite, they have to be "pulled off". I'm speaking from years of experiance not from one bad experiance or possibly bad install.

the answer to your question regarding keeping the product on for more than two years is why would you? thats the beauty of the product, you can install and remove them as often as you want to clean any build up around them and to re wax the car under them and also to clean them up. as far as i'm concerned and i may be wrong, what product can you buy for the price that offers any kind of paint protection that can be installed, removed, reinstalled, and thrown away and re purchased that doesn't break the bank?? for the minor investment (well under $100) i would purchase them and if you don't like them don't use them. if applied properly and with patience, and left to dry the appropriate amount of time you will like and appreciate their purpose.

I have used this product in the past as well. The only time I have a problem with them coming off is if it is cool out when I put them on. Done properly, I have driven through pounding rain and not lost any. I found that in cool weather, the adhesion is not as good and they will tend to come off. I also found that a good coat of Zaino prior to application helps a lot. I also use a 50/50 mix of distilled water and Zaino Z6 to put them on, it seems to work really good and they are even less visable with this method. You must remember, this product is made to be taken on and off and is not permanent. As such, there is risk to losing pieces, especially if not applied properly. To me, losing an occasional piece was worth the protection they afforded at the price they cost. Also, when they get dinged up you can replace them. Ever see the 3M stuff dinged up?

Sure we are going to respond. Isn’t that what this forum is for?
We respond to questions asked. Respond to thank all those who create threads about how happy they are with the product and the service ..and certainly when someone posts a "I followed the directions to the letter"... but didn’t.

If you remember you posted about this situation (your trip) about 1-2 years ago.
The rep merely just responded that you could apply the kit in cool weather but beacuse you applied it in January/February it seems it might have been installed way below the temperature we recommend in the instructions (65) which would be indicative to comments you made about tight corners and air bubbles.

What was important was he asked for you to call him before you left on your trip. You did not. Asked for you to call back after..you did not.

READ IT HERE.

If the product did not work...it would not work for anyone. Period. There should not be one positive comment here, in any other thread, in the thread from over a 1-2 years ago (above),other forums, and there should not be any 165mph testimonials ...etc
This is obviously not the case.

I'm sorry you had a problem. I wish you would have called us. We could have saved you some time and possiply your paint.

I just placed an order and hopefully will have it in a few days. You may want to order it here on the forum as it it less expensive than ordering through Eklers, MidAmerica etc. In that way there is less risk if it doesn't work for you.

If it works though it will be nice to have a product that you can put on for road trips etc and still take off for car shows and other times you don't want the perm 3m type of product.

3M and Cleartastic are different products. The Cleartastic is designed to put on and take off with ease. I chose to go with the 3M product. You need to get it professionally installed and it will stay on until it is peeled off, and it is not reusable.

Several people in my Corvette Club have lost sheets of Cleartastic at speeds in excess of 100 MPH. That is the main reason I decided to go with the 3M product.
