I bought a '97 w/o the remote key fob and would like to know if/how I can tell if /when I bought one it would work ------before I spend the big bucks on one.

Call your local dealer's parts department and get them to tell you the part number of the remote for your year car. Make sure you get one with that part number. The part number is on the back of the remote.

I would contact the dealer to get the right part number. Then go on ebay and purchase a used fob. The prices are much lower than a new one and I didn't have any issues with the one I purchased on ebay. Got it here, programmed it and I've had no problems with it at all. Of course a new one from the dealer reduces the risk of getting a bad fob, but the savings might be worth the minimal risk. Your choice.

PN on mine 99' is GM10353839
MODEL/FCC ID: AB00216T
I think they are the same for 97 - 99 and the also have a switch for Passive. I don't think later years had the Passive function.
