You could probably get away with it in some areas, but not all. For example, you would never get the compartments to latch with a double thickness (there aren't enough threads on the latch stub to shim it sufficiently to compensate). I also don't think you could double up on the vertical surfaces. As it was, I was barely able to reinstall the thumb nuts that secure the rear corner pieces. You could certainly do double thickness in the compartment cavities and over the wheel wells though.

Good idea... but I'm not going to rip out my carpeting again to test your theory!
