Wow, this is interesting! Anyone else have this problem with Shell in their C5?
Sulfer content is not a problem in the South!! However the State of Florida does continue to have problems not only with sulfer but presidential elections. I use V Power in all four of my vehicles and have never had a problem.
Normally I use Chevron 93, but was going on a Cruise and Shell was the only station handy to top off the tank. I couldn't believe the strong sulphur smell while filling up.
I have had off and on fuel guage problems since I bought it. Some with BP, some with Sunoco and some with Citgo. Dealer told me to not use any station that I have problems with. LOL. Mostly Mobil now but still have problems from time to time.
I have used premium Amoco, well now it's BP, in my cars for more years than I can remember including my 02 C5 since day 1. I've never had a gauge problem.
Shell, is all I have used in the past six or seven months; except when on trips. All the BPs around here closed, and never liked Exxon and the only Chevron is older than I am.
Knowing the problem that usually causes the gauge to go bad, I find it hard to believe that one tankful caused the problem. Unless, there was an enormous amount of sulfur in that tankful. I know this happened last year to Marathon up in the KY area, as well as Shell in the lower states. However, Shell and Marathon owned up and paid for new senders. In addition, the amount of sulfur that was in these instances trashed the sender, and another tankful of other fuel did not solve the problem; a new sender unit was required.
What is interesting about my guage's malfunction is that I filled up in South Georgia, at a new Shell station in Bainbridge. I have used Shell gas before and did not have a problem but for some reason the gas from that Shell station was the DEBIL! I will try it again around here in Florida sometime, maybe....

BTW SLIK we had no problems here in Florida electing a President this time around (LOL) Almost 10% of the total Nation's margin of victory from ONE state. We didn't want another 2000
Filled up with Shell 93 V-Power, and caused my gas guage to go wacko. i do not suggest using that gas. Have never had any problems using the Chevron. Filled 'er up with Chevron and the guage works again. So much for wishfull thinking

That's like saying all whiskey is the same-except for the differences.

Last summer in South Florida, Shell had a major concern with this issue.
Since then I have heard nothing negative about Shell.
I follow the owner manual instructions and suggestions and I fill the tank with Shell 89 octane since January 2004. Touch wood because I never had a problem so far either with Shell or the octane number .
