My friend is looking at an '01 speedway white/mod red zo6 with 25k on the clock. He really likes the car but is afraid of the oil consumption issue. Are all 01's affected or just the early production cars? The car was manufactured in april of 01. Any help would be great!
I was having a bit of an oil consumption issue until I installed a PCV catch can ($90) and a Metco valve cover breather ($50). The oil consumption issue risk can be mitigated, per above - at least in my experience.
go for it, if its clean, and runs good, so what if it needs a 1/2 qourt of oil in between changes, i have heard of 02-04 that use oil, run the vin at a chevy dealer to see what kind of service it has had in the past

As has previously been stated, have the dealership print out the service history - or at least bring the history up on the computer for your friend to review -
Check for the re-ring. If it has not had it done, the car may not have had an issue.
As an aside, they only made white Z06's in 2001, and there were very few made - less than 300 - and even less with the beautiful (IMO) mod red interior.
