Default Stupid Question About Oil Filter

Hi all,

I have some AC Delco Gold filters that I bought 3 years ago at a good price. Do I have to worry about them sitting that long (still in box)? Basically, how long are they good for? Am I risking anything by using them after they have been sitting for so long?

Thanks,
Matt

I would think you would be ok. But if you leak you will find out fast.

As long as they haven't been stored in an extremely humid area they'll be fine. The filter media is cellulose [paper] and isn't going to breakdown for a long time if stored dry.

Make sure there is NO RUST on any of the metal. I purchased a boat load of filters once and the bases rusted. I took them back and K-Mart would not take them back without the receipt and the kicker was....they were their own brand. SO.......I did what everyother redblooded American would do........contacted Penske who's name was on them, raised *&^% , got my money back and K-Mart wonders why Walmart kicks their ***. I bought these filters for daily drivers, not my Vette. But it is best to check.

Thanks...I live in the desert, so humidity is not a problem. I'll check for rust just in case.

Coat the threaded section of each filter with oil, otherwise, they WILL rust!

The aviation oil filters I buy have a use by date, generally 5 years from manufacture. As far as I know, it is the rubber parts inside that have a cure date. Most aircraft rubber seals and stuff have a declared shelf life of 60 months from cure date.

The funny thing is once installed on the plane, nobody seems to care what the cure date is anymore.

(Psst...This post was inspired by EG)

Just stick a Type R sticker on the oil filters before you use them for an extra 4 hp...

You should be OK as long as the filters have been stored dry and the rubber seal is good.

My filters are about 3 years old as well. (I bought a 6-pack, and have 1 or 2 left.) I haven't had any problems.
