Default 2001 purchase

Hello guys and gals. I am helping my sister with her first vette purchase and we have a 01 vert in our sights. I need some quick input if there is any out there. The car is silver metallic and has had major clearcoat issues on the hood, back deck and rear bumper. All three areas have been refinished, at different times since built. Does anyone know if there were any paint issues on 01's or what could be the cause of major clearcoat peeling? Any quick responses would be appreciated. Thanks

RJ

I can't help you with the history of paint issues but I wouldn't by a vert with any. There are plent of cars out there ithout issues. I'd find a clean one if I were you. Good luck and keep us posted.

I am not aware of any problems. My 97 is white but I have not had any problems. Also it does not stay outside much. Maybe some of the other's here that has the Silver color can help. I have found that you should not be hasty on making the purchase. There will be plenty of vettes out there to pick from. [IMG][/IMG]

Get a carfax and service history. Try posting on this forum and see if anyone can help you out (usually someone will be able to supply you with the history of the car).

Take note that some early model 01s have Oil Consumption problems (I know I have 1), but it is fixable (looking into extended warranty might be a good idea).

otherwise the 01 car is great besides all the standard problems that all C5s can have.

I have an 01 Mag Red and have never had any paint issues. I know a guy who bought a silver 01 vert and its paint is perfect. I'd be a bit suspicious about that car, considering the paint issue.

I have a Red 01 and no paint issues (other than the train on the overpass that threw a rock down and chipped my hood )

I have an 01 Yellow Vert and have no problems with the paint. I would continue searching for another. Good Luck!

If it is having clearcoat peeling problems, my bet is that it has been repainted with a quick and cheap paint job. I would not touch it!!

I have an '01 vert. Paint has been perfect except when some d*ck wad kid threw a rock and it took a sizable gouge out of the front fascia.

If it sat in the sun too long or in a place where the humidity was high or close to construction areas with high contaminates in the air or even close to a beach for extended periods of time etc, etc...

Not to offend any 01 owners here but the 01's were the ones most prone to be oil burners. A ring job is NOT minor surgery, either.

Guys, thanks for all the good input on the clearcoat and oil consumption issue on this 01. My sister loves the car and has the guy down to $32,800 to do the deal. The car has 21,000 miles on it and is in good shape. What do you guys think of the price? Comments. Thanks

RJ

That sounds high to me also. The car only has 21K on the clock and is probably super clean and verts cost more but it's 4 years old and the C6 is out now. Try kbb.com or nada.com. Also, check last Sunday's Tribune Automotive section and pick up the Sports Car version of Auto Trader. This should give you a good idea of what it's worth. Good luck.

I don't recall hearing about any paint issues with the C5. Like was mentioned above, there are a lot of pristine examples of the car out there right now - be patient and find one that does not have these type of problems.

Spend some time here. Read the stcky at the top, read the for sale section, and ask plenty of questions. Oh, and skip this one.

Way, way high in price. And for a car that is questionable. My '87 C4 had perfect paint and outstanding clear coat to the day that I sold it. No real issues or problems with clear coat after about 1985.
