Obviously, try the simple fixes first. Contact cleaner and sand paper is a lot cheaper than a CLB. Do keep in mind though that the column lock problem will (and often does) happen again in manual transmissions even after the dealer recall fix has been performed. It happened to me, it's happened to several forum members (just do a search), and it could leave you stranded too.
Hi, I had the recall done on my 98 last week, left the dealer and got the "pull key" an hour later! Then, returned to dealer next day. They said the tech assist team was already working on the same problem on another vette. They ended up removing the relay that GM had them instal as part of the recall, and only having the collar removed that the column lock hits. After 4 days no codes, all seems ok! But the dealer said they will be in touch, if the GM tech. assistance advisors come up with any thing new. They say GM is aware of a new problem and are looking into a future recall. I noticed the 2005 Vette on the showroom floor had an automatic and the wheel DOES NOT lock. Good luck, Mark
Just wanted to ask something. I believe I read on the forum that the CLB didn't work on "98s with manual transmissions. Or maybe I'm mistaken? Anybody know for sure?
Only the first 3 or 4 model year C-5's with automatic transmissions had the locking steering columns. All MN6's came equipped with locking columns. For the poster with the 98 with auto that is having the pull key message and then the car shuts down when you try to take off, I'll try to explain what I think is happening. It sounds like your car has already been in for the incorrect recall since they reflash the computer to shut down the fuel pump whenever the pull key message is displayed. I know they do the reflash on MN6's but not sure about the A4's.
It is a known fact that many inexperienced techs working in dealerships have performed the wrong (MN6) recall on A4 cars. You see, on MN6's all they do is the reflash whereas on the A-4's they are supposed to pull the actual locking plate out and replace it with a blank plate so it can't possibly lock. They can't do this on a MN6 because of a federal law requiring locking steering columns and/or locking gear shifters.
For anyone out there wondering if their car has a CLB simply grip your steering wheel with the ignition key in your pocket or in the off position. Try to turn the steering wheel from left to right. If it will turn then your car has the CLB if it's an MN6.
I hope the above info helps some of our new members. Bottom line is if you have an A4 take it to the dealer if column still locks. If you have an MN6 and the column still locks, buy and install a CLB ASAP.
