So those "vents" in front of the doors...I guess they are just for looks? They do look cool, but can they be functional as well? I thought maybe hot air could escape from under the hood, but the plastic on the inside of the vents blocks any kind of airway.

Air does get through there so presumably so does engine heat. There was a post yesterday about a yellow vette that had the engine catch fire. You could clearly see burn marks from the heat that had come from those side vents...
although it is not a big hole, the duct work from the back of the wheel well does allow air to get out there. by baffling it (making air go around corners in there) it prevents chunks of stuff being propelled against the side of the car.

Interesting. I knew air actually came through, but not the entire story. Thanks.
I didn't think that air actually got through....there's a plastic plate that blocks it off, at least mine which I can't imagine is any different. Some people have removed the driver's side plate to get the airflow mostly to aid in cooling and depressurizing the engine compartment. But DON'T take off the passenger side!!!! The PCM and other electronics are there and water can get to it.
I don't know about air, but last weekend a mouse got in mine while I was detailing in my garage with the garge door open. I thought I had scared it out of the garage, when I went back later that night I seen its head pop out of the drivers side vent with its little eyes looking at me. I started her up and we went for a nice ride. Has not been back since.
