Anybody experience any issues with the August, 2004 recall? The recall is for the lower control arm washers.

GM quote:

"Washers that are used along with nuts to attach the lower control arms were made of the wrong steel material. These washers may fracture and become loose or fall away from the vehicle, making it possible for the control arm to separate."

My left-rear wheel is dramatically tilted out and is there is no tread left on the outside of the tire. No wear on the middle or inside. Front tires are not affected. Right-rear tire shows a little bit more wear on the outside, but not as much as left-rear.

It's going to the dealer tomorrow. Any thoughts?

Sounds like an alignment problem. If the lower control arm was coming loose the wheel would be sticking out at the bottom and the tread wear would be on the inside edge.

The recall covered a few months of production late 03 through early 04. Dealer has the dates to compare to your mfg. date to see if your car was included in the recall. It is a fairly simple fix.

 

Does anyone know what vin numbers are in the recall?? My car was at the dealer a few months back but they never said a word about it.

 

The recall notice (which the dealers have access to) has the specific dates, or they can enter your VIN and it will tell you if it was mfg'd during the recall timeframe. Sorry, I don't have the VIN's or recall notice handy. If you don't get an answer by next week PM me and I'll hunt for the recall paperwork.

 

Took the car in for the recall & had no problems with the car before the recall work or after. You have to make sure that the dealer has the parts before you take it in for the recall work.
Get it done, only takes a couple of hours.

last five vin#s 118579-127798, got these at my dealer last fall when I had my 04, lower control arm ball-stud washers replaced, time 1-1&half hours. If they have to replace the lower control arms,more time plus alinement. My dealer said he had done about 10 before mine and none needed control arms replaced.

 

my VIN number falls within that range =(

thanks for the heads up, now i must find time to get it fixed

is this a MUST DO ASAP?

the only thing i'm worried about is that they would have to lift the car up, and because mine is lowered with longer bolts and cut bushings, i will feel uneasy trusting the dealership unless i'm there to watch

Condition
General Motors has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2004 Cadillac CTS, SRX and XLR, and Chevrolet Corvette vehicles. Washers that are used along with nuts to attach the lower control arms were made of the wrong steel material. These washers may fracture and become loose or fall away from the vehicle, making it possible for the control arm to separate. If this were to occur on the front of the vehicle, the affected corner of the vehicle will drop and the affected wheel could tilt outward, creating a dragging action that would tend to slow the vehicle and turn it in the direction of the affected corner. The driver could maintain some steering control with the unaffected wheel, but the vehicle control would be diminished. If the separation occurs at the rear of the vehicle (XLR and Corvette only), it could cause unexpected right or left lateral forces at the rear of the vehicle. Although steering of the front wheels would be unaffected, control of vehicle direction would be impaired.

Front or rear control arm separation may also reduce brake system performance and increase stopping distance.

If these events occur and the driver is unable to react in time, a crash could occur.

Correction
Dealers are to install a new nut and washer, and if required, replace the ball stud and/or steering knuckle.

An initial supply of nuts required to complete this recall will be pre-shipped to involved dealers of record. This pre-shipment is scheduled to begin the week of August 9, 2004 and will be approximately 20& of each dealer's involved vehicles. Pre-shipped parts will be charged to dealer's open parts account.



Additional parts, if required, are to be obtained from General Motors Service Parts Operations (GMSPO). Please refer to your "involved vehicles listing" before ordering parts. Normal orders should be placed on a DRO=Daily Replenishment Order. In an emergency situation, parts should be ordered on a CSO=Customer Special Order.


Important
Less than 1% of the population is expected to require replacement of the lower control arm and knuckle. If the inspection indicates that replacement is required, contact a representative at the PQC at 1-866-654-7654, between the hours of 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM in each time zone in the continental US (in Canada, Eastern to Pacific Time), Monday through Friday.
