I have popped off the plastic gear pattern and I am looking at the metal wedge inside. I have tried 10 ways from Sunday to get the freakin thing out...
It has been suggested that placing two screwdrivers under the little ledges on the top and prising both up at the same time works. Me? I sawed away the area behind the pin and knocked it out backwards.
Take two flat bladed screw drivers. Locate them touching the holding pin with their handles pointed to each door. Place inward and upward pressure and it literally pops out. You will be amazed at how easy it is.
No need for a saw, hammer or vise grips. I used a rubber mallet to make sure it was properly seated when I finished.
Easy...not really. Mine was a PAIN!! Took a while using the screwdriver method, but I did finally get it out. Mine ended up in 2 pieces, the metal it is made out of is crap. Once I got it up some with the screwdrivers, I put vise grips on and used a hammer to get it out. It didn't matter that the little T part broke off...I was replacing the shift **** anyway.

I got mine off w/ 1 flat head screwdriver. Spray a tiny bit of WD40 in there 1st to help a bit. As above, the metal is crap. Just go slow & be persistent. It WILL come out.

yes, two flat blade screwdrivers, one on each side, prying upward like you are opening a wine bottle with a corkscrew(assuming, of course, that you don't get your wine from a box......that wouldn't help)
