Default great trunk opening idea

here's a great tip: i finally did what i'd read about on this forum for a long time, which is spray some wd-40 on the center locking mechanism/hatch. now when i open the trunk via the fob or from inside, the trunk pops up about 2 inches all the time.

this is a great idea for those of you whose trunk doesn't (or occasionally doesn't) open all the way. i was having a big problem with this, & kept having to open & shut the driver side door so the air pressure would pop open the lid. that was very annoying, to say the least. now, no more!

That's usually the first thing many of us do, however it didn't work for me. I'm adding the second strut today and if that doesn't work I off to Home Deport to buy a 50 cent spring which I know works.

Take a look at the only DIY mod that works 24/7:

BTW my early 03 Z came from the factory with only one strut. Other's have two. Go figure.

That one strut thing is odd, but watch 03's we be the most "Collectable" because of it

Isn't there a TSB out that instructs the dealers to add a strut if the Customer complains about the trunk not opening properly?

Even with two, in the summer, the lid still didn't pop up much, that helper spring is the way to go!

The thing I would be concerned about is that over time the ends of the spring would scratch the shaft on the strut and cause it to start leaking.
Coming up with a bushing to keep the spring centered on the shaft might be a little difficult.

Wonder why they designed trunk with 1 latch in center...rather than 2...1 on each end. Wouldn't it make more sense from an design standpoint??

My buddy who devised this fix has been using it w/o issue since 2001. This is a photo of his car after over 4 use in use. So far there are no issues. BTW we did the spring mod first and it worked great so I didn't add the second strut (he had a spare) and they cost $2.87 for two with tax at Home Depot.

My deck lid POPS up about 2 inches now. As far as the TSB is concerned it only addresses a deck lid that's not "aligned" has nothing to do with "opening".

My 02 has 2 struts. But it did the same thing. Trunk lid would barely pop open. Lubed the latch and all the hinges and now it pops about 2in. I'll keep the spring idea in mind. Not a bad idea at all.

My '02 Z also had this problem. If anyone wants an alternate fix, try this. My M3 cab, has the same size/same kind of plastic screw in stops, only with a spring loaded center section. Clever "krauts" ! Pops the deck lid like magic now. Can send pics if anyone is interested. Drop by your Bimmer dealer.

I'd be interested in this part as well. I've tried all the other fixes and my trunk still barely pops.
Please send pics and part number if you have it.
Thanks

i like the spring idea, are you using 1 or 2 springs? (both sides?)
where in home depot are these? and what size? part number?
i think itd be hard to make it rattle when the trunk is closed cause its compressed, althou itd most likely rattle while driving with trunk open.
thanks for the cool idea.

jim your idea is good too!

Spraying white lithium grease on the latch and other parts is still working for me.

Mobil1 spray lube works for me. I found the product at MSC, on the net. I buy 3 cans at a time, at $11.99 a can. I use it on all the door hinges, locks, and latches. The trunk pops open each time. A two second shot in the latch every month keeps the trunk working with no problems.

I agree. It is no wonder the trunk does not pop up when I could find NO trace of any lubricant from the factory on the latch assembly or the pop up spring.
I put white grease on the latch assembly and on the spring coils, and now it pops up every time.
