To hide somthing on the wheelwells of course! I spent most of the day with a bottle of mineral spirits removing it from the wheelwells. Looks like a the previous owner run over some type of grey epoxy. At least I got most of it off. Geesh.
The grey epoxy is the epoxy that they use to glue the reflectors in the street. It is a really mess if you run over it. I was directed by a road crew through some last year and it sprayed all up on the lower sides of the car. I had no idea until it was too late and had dried. I had to wet sand and buff the stuff off. What a pain.
If you were to sink so low as to own a C4 or earlier, AND be stupid enough to drive it in the winter - the frame will rust like a stack of nails in a whale's vagina. Seriously.

he makes a good point there. I can imagine that restorers of C3's wish the owner had the car originally undercoated. A Corvette becomes worthless when the frame LOOKS like swiss cheese.
