My 2000 couple had the 3.15's and my 2002 vert has the 2.73's. Do I wish I had the 3.15's---yes. Is there a big difference--not really. If I decide to upgrade I will go to 3.42 or 3.73's. The 2.73's are a bit slow on take off, but depending on the pavement my all stock vert will break lose around 15-25 mph once the rpm's start to build.

Default Gear Options

So what are all the gear options available for the C5? I'm assuming the higher the number, the faster the car will be, but the lower the top speed. Is this correct?

A4 could get either:

2.73
3.15

MN6

Has no option, if it is a MN6 it is always:

3.42

And yes, the higher the number, the lower the gear ratio and the faster you will accelarate due to mechanical advantage. The lower gear ratio (higher number) will limit your top speed.

So manuals have 3.42 gearing but I read about people installing different gears (4.11, etc). How is this done? Are these not factory gear sets?

one method is to replace the entire diff (called the "carrier" on a C5) with one having the desired ratio:
http://mikemercury.home.att.net/342.htm

Getrag sold carriers to GM having 2.73, 3.15, and 3.42 ratios in them. Getrag also made a small amount of 3.73 carriers as well then were never placed in production C5's.

Motive Gear makes gear sets in the 3.73, 3.90, and 4.10 ratios. These gears would need to be installed into an existing rear carrier (obviously the original gears would be removed first).

It's interesting that two of my buddies are going thru this very same mental exercise right now. Both have A4's - one has a 3.15 in his and just ordered a 3.73 brand new from T Byrne. The other has a 2.73 and bought a 3.42 used from right here on the Forum.

The one buying the 3.73 already has a Predator and will use it to reprogram the computer after the gears are installed.

The other is buying a used Predator from a different guy here on the Forum.

I guess my thoughts are what your are plans for the car? Normal street driving, you'll see more "SNAP" off the line. I think we all tend to fall into the trap of wanting a car that will melt the tires off of it like a Top Fuel Rail.

Personally - I have an MN6 with 3.42's and I can tell you that I've turned the TC off once, slipped the clutch, and smoked the tires. (closed access off public roads of course! )

I know it can do it - been there, done that. Guess I'm an old fart and I don't get my jolly's melting $300 tires...... .02 deposited.....

Enjoy your car and don't worry too much about getting rubber in all four gears, like the song says!
