check the RPO codes on your glove compartment door, assuming they have not been upgraded they'll be on the list
I did but how do I know which code pertains to the gears and or size? I see a lot of numbers and letters but nothing that identifies the gear size? Thanks...

In addition to checking the RPO codes, you can do it easily on an A4 while driving. Put your gear selector in 3rd, accelerate to 75 mph and hold it there. If the tachometer shows 2730 rpm you have 2.73 gears. If the tach shows 3150 your gears will be 3.15 and so on. This is actually better than the RPO codes because the previous owner may have changed the gears and your RPO code would then be useless. It also is easier than jacking up the car and crawling under it to check the gearbox.

Don't be bummed, you were driving the car and were happy with it until you knew the gear ratio right? Now what if the 3.15 code was in the glove box, would you feel better? The car isn't going to perform any differently now that you know the gear ratio right?
Don't let a number get you down, if you liked the car before there is no reason not to like it now.

Hey thats true still love the car. Great point! Thanks
I wouldn't let that bother me. I have the 2.73 and it works great. A little slow off the line, but top end is wonderful. If you do a lot of highway driving, you'll see what I mean.
How does it run with the 3.15's? Is it much faster than the standard 2.73 cars?
What's you best 1/4 times??
Really depends on the driver if you're talking about a race at the track....if you and I were exactly equal drivers, I'd probably pull away from you a few car lengths, but not much i'd imagine.
I can spin the tires at will off the line, even on dry pavement, no biggie.
I think the 3.15's are maybe just a few tenth faster in the 1/4.
I'm right at 13.4 1/4 bone stock, in drive, no burnout, nonrunflats, but not the best driver and don't do it enough to know how.
I get 27-29mpg on the highway at cruising speed of 67-70mph.
I love my vette.

Haven’t had chance to take it to the track. I’m guessing that the car is bone stock though.

Spoken like a man with a true 2.73 ratio,
I've got a 3.15 and don't thinks it's enough, I can't imagine what a 2.73 feels like ..
02- C5 - A4, wondering what gears I have or how I can find out?
Great question, DJN! I just got my '97 C5-A4 last weekend and was wondering the same thing. Although I assume if it has the upgraded ratios that would have been a selling point mentioned by the dealer. So Im assuming I have the 2.73. Im gonna check for sure tomorrow.
The car is still incredibly powerful though! Way faster than my twin turbo 300ZX.
How hard and expensive of an ordeal is it to upgrade such a thing?
TrueBlue02 mentions a vararam. Ive heard this mentioned before, but not sure what that is. Is that step #1 to modifying a stock A-4 for more HP and quicker bursts of speed?
OK I ADMIT IT! Im already wanting to pump up my beast to it's maximum potential!
