Well, I gotta tell you, this ain't as easy as it sounds.

I've primered it and painted it with a spray can of GM touchup paint. Tonight makes the third time. I just cannot get it shiny enough. I put it next to the finish of the car and it looks ten years older. But it's not because I'm not polishing it enough, I've polished clear through to the primer three times now and I just can't get a really nice deep shine to it.

Anyone have any suggestions?

I would knock it down with 320 so it is even all across. Then reprime it and follow the steps. As long as the paint underneath has good adhesion you are ok. If it is chipping or pealing you need to go all the way down to the base.
Thanks ER. I had no intention of using any sort of stripper unless I was absolutely convinced it would be safe on this plastic. Yep, sanding looks like the best way to get all that off.

Jack,

You can use stripper but you have to use "plasticstripper"... it's specially made for urethane parts. It comes in a spray bomb. Just becareful, put the stripper on it, let it set for the recommended time and then rinse. Allow it to dry and apply again as necc.

If you aren't comfortable with it, send it to me, we use a blaster sometimes, (it uses crushed walnut shells) and then apply a special waterborne primer.

If I can help, let me know...

Well, coincidently, I bought the VERY LAST can...

Seriously, you can go to any Carquest, Napa or bodyshop supply place. Just ask for bumper cover stripper.

Just for the record, for as much as you have probably put on there, you can probably sand it down.

Let me know...
