Wipe down the area with denatured alcohol before you do anything. Then try lining up the letters before taking off the backing. Watch out for the letter "E". If you do it wrong, it will look like CORVCTTC.
I just did mine and was a little spooked when I started. Had a beer, did a test run, cleaned the area, peeled the letters, stuck 'em in, had more beer. It really isn't hard to do.

The adhesive promoter comes in little packets along with the letters and enhances the adhesiveness of the sticky tape behind the letters. You still need to clean with denatured alcohol before applying the promoter.

So your saying beer helps? Any particular brand? Miller lite?
You may want to try this to insure all letters are correct, especially the "E". Before you remove the protective backing from each letter place a small piece of scotch tape to the top of the letter or piece (middle insert for the letter "E"). Then very lightly stick the scotch tape to the vette and align the letter, when you have it aligned, remove the protective covering and allow the letter to settle on the vett. Make one final check for alignment and if it's OK press the letter in place. When I did mine I was scared to death of fouling it up, but with the procedure outlined above, it came out perfect on the front and back. By the way, if you plan on doing the front license plate holder, you have to bend the the "V" slightly (atleast I had too on my 03). Good luck, you love the results.
