Default C5 questions

It is looking like I may be picking up a 2000 Dark Bowling Green 'Vette this next weekend if I can get everything done in time. I heard that the front tires are low on tread and I will have to buy at least a front pair of runflats to replace them (rears are around 95%).

How bad are the runflat tires for noise really? I am wondering if it would be better to get Nitto x4 (or some other recommended brand) and sell the rear runflats. I will be placing the tires on the stock rims (5-spoke).

How good (or bad?) is the alarm system on a 2000 Corvette? Is it advised to get another alarm since I don't have a private garage? I have enclosed parking in an old Hotel.

More questions to come.

Hope you get your car. That Bowling Green is a very rear color. IMO, sell the runflats and buy some Toyo Proxes. The car should be garaged, however in your case the coverd parking is ok. The C5 has a passive alarm system no motion detector. Good luck.

I've owned and bought tires for over 30 cars, and these GY runflats are very bad for noise, handling, ect. I can't wait for mine to wear out, they were on when I bought it. The only thing they do well is not go flat. There are many other choices out there, and the subject has been dicussed many times. You may want to try a search -

They are a little noiser than non. I for one prefer the piece of mind of having the runflats on the car. The good news for you is that for the first 4000 miles or so they are almost quiet. Good luck on the purchase.

I've only had my coupe for a little while. I don't really have anything to compare the tire noise to personally. I have heard that the Kumho and Michelin tires are quieter.

Hope you get your ride.

I'm running Firestone Firehawks which are a runflat tire also.

The stock runflats can get noisy, depending on how much tread is left and how old the tires are. If you have to replace the fronts anyway, try a set of four Firestone Firehawks - I have a set of these and they are very good tires.

I have the Firestones as well. They are much quieter and ride better. You still have the protection of the run flat if that is important to you.

I agree. I'll never have a set of non-runflats.

If you're concerned about the noise, you have a couple of options while staying with runflats.

1) First of all, as someone else noted, Firestone, Michelin, Kuhmo and other companies make runflats; several are advertised as being much quieter than the Goodyear runflats. Just make sure you're aware of the repair limitations. Goodyears can be repaired after driving up to 200 miles on them flat. Most other tires can't be repaired at all or at a much lower mileage only.

2) There's the famous "Frost-King" sound insulation mod as well as several commercial insulation packages.

Bowling Green Metallic is a very cool and mysterious color. Pending lighting it changes to black. It's obviously an unpopular color as so few were made, but those of us who own them have come to love BGM more and more. I own a 2001 BGM with tan interior. If I had to do it over again, I'd get the same color combo.

Be sure to use only Zaino on that color.

About tires. My 01 has the original stock with 12,000 miles. I bought the car with 5000 miles on it. They started out relatively quiet, but as the miles are added, the noise level increases to a disappointing level. In my late 40's, I drive very conservatively, commuting around town on good roads, in good weather. With most of the thead remaining, the GY runflats are as loud as ever. If this keeps up, I can't imagine how loud they will be with twice the mileage.

My advise, consider another runflat brand. www.tirerack.com has lots of ratings on tires. I seem to recall Firestone offered Corvette applied runflats with a quiet rating.

My first and last set of tires are these Goodyear F1 runflats. The noise takes away too much of the enjoyment.

Stock alarm is good, but it won't protect from vandalism. Get good insurance.
