I installed a computer in the garage, I got the idea when working on the C3 last week changing the intake manifold and had to consult the forum on a couple things which meant going in the house to get the laptop a few times. I also wanted to listen to internet radio and have the option of playing MP3's, lucky for me my profession is computers so I grabbed one of the old ones laying around and set it up, installed wireless network card and I'm good to go. Here's a couple pics.

Love the idea, but lack the knowledge. I have the computer in the house with internet and would like to be able to link it to the one in the garage, which is a detached garage. Is there a way to go the wireless network thingie to the computer in the garage? I would not have the slightest idea what i would need to buy or how to do it.

All things are possible with the right budget and no, this is not terribly expensive. Less than 500 for the parts plus the cost of an additional computer for the garage. That 500 might include the cost of the computer if you work all the angles. The big thing here is distance between where the two computers are going to be located. Also, once you go from one computer hooked to the Internet to multiple ones, security becomes an issue. Although it is not the prime driver of what you're trying to do. You just need to account for it in your plan.
