one quick and easy way to do some security is to assign each computer an IP address and in the router configuration there is an area that you can enter those addresses and check to "only allow" the addresses you're using.
Love the idea, but lack the knowledge. I have the computer in the house with internet and would like to be able to link it to the one in the garage, which is a detached garage. Is there a way to go the wireless network thingie to the computer in the garage? I would not have the slightest idea what i would need to buy or how to do it.
Go to Comp USA or other large Computer store in your area and ask them about a "LinkSys" wireless router.
All you do is hook this router up to your modem instead of your PC, then you'll need a wireless card to go in all the computers in your household and configure them. After that, boom, everybody can share printers, DSL lines, everything and you can take it wherever you want.
LINKSYS has outstanding customer support and if you have any problems hooking it up, they'll walk you through the process. It's really not very hard. If I can help, shoot me a PM.
I do something similar to that with my laptop. I setup a wireless internet
router (yes, I setup my security) and take the laptop to the garage when
I need it as a resource. I had it next to me with Kens instructions pulled
up when I put my new VE seat covers on! Technology can be a pain, but
its so

I got a Linksys a couple weeks ago and it's been working flawlessly. I had 2 different Netgears before that and had to reset them every day, got tire of that mess, Netgear had no solution for the problem.
