Default HELP: DIC: Low Oil

Driving into work today in my 01 Coupe and the low oil level message comes on the DIC. Strange, I think to myself, because I had the oil changed about 4000 miles ago. I have read on CF that various 00 and 01's were prone to excessive oil consumption. My question is what is excessive? they added about a quart and a half? I am out of warranty altough do have a pretty good aftermarket extended warranty.

Thanks,

So you had the oil changed but have you ever checked your own oil level? This is something you want to do at least weekly. Excessive oil consumption usually happens when the car is driven hard with high rpms. I'm thinking who ever did your oil change didn't check for the correct level afterwards.

That's a real possibility. You should watch it for the next few months and check it closely on your own. It is possible that the tech only put in 6 and not the 6.5 quarts that you should have gotten. Also, the very nature of getting on these cars hard can contribute to a little oil consumption (at least in my '97's case) but then I can also drive 2700 miles round trip to Bowling Green and not use a drop

When I had my car in for excessive oil consumption, GM's guidelines were anything more than a quart in 2000 miles qualified. Mine was using a quart every 1200 miles. First thing to do is make sure the oil is full to begin with, then keep track. If you are using a quart and a half every 4000 miles, I doubt you will qualify for any repairs. JMO.

Thanks all for the input. JD what was the resolution for you?

I had this exact thing happen. Took it back to where I had the oil changed (Don Steves Chevrolet in La Habra, CA) and they added 1.5 quarts. I think the mechanic didn't add enough for the filter.

See if it happens again after topping it off.

My low oil level light comes on usually when I am around 4-5k miles after an oil change. If you take a look at your oil level by the dipstick- you are probably near the bottom of safe or in the add range. I add a quart and I am usually fine until the next oil change. It is definately related to driving habits- the more you get on the gas pedal=the more oil you will consume... but that is what I bought the car for! enjoy it!
