Default LS7 Coming in August

Hey Z06 pilots I was interested in knowing if any of you have read or heard that GM is planning on releasing the LS7 Crate engine out of the box in August.
Is anyone considering swapping to the new gen`s power mill? A close friend of mine has an 02 ZO6 which is why I am interested.

I think the new Z06 looks like sh it and actually like the looks of a regular C6 Coupe over the new Z!!! Man though, i would kill for that drivetrain, performance, technology and GM backed warranty in my EB 02 Zs body!!!!!!!!

Being that it is a Corvette, I am forcing myself to like it. Here is the problem for me. Other day on Del Norte Rd. I notice something coming up from behind 1K yards back. I only see the front. I swear it looked like a Mazda Miata coming at me. Only tell it was really close did I recognize that smiling frog face on a new Vert. Unreal. I suspect we will see changes in the up and coming model to follow, I hope.

P.S. Please send check my way too.

this was announced a few months ago

FOR RELEASE: 2005-03-22

CONTACTS

Most Powerful Small-Block Ever - Available in a Crate

DETROIT - Chevrolet unveiled the 2006 Corvette Z06 at Detroit's North American International Auto Show in January, and now GM Performance Parts is unveiling the crate engine version of the LS7 engine that powers it. This latest Z06, billed as "the fastest, most powerful car ever offered by Chevrolet and GM," has enthusiasts looking for that kind of power in a crate engine. GM Performance Parts is ready to end that search as it offers the LS7 (P/N 17802397) at GM dealerships and Authorized Centers, nationwide in August.

This small-block V-8 dreams big, displacing big-block cubic inches at 7.0 Liters (427 cubic inches) and big-block power at 500 hp at 6200 rpm. It also benches 475 lb.-ft. of torque at 4800 rpm. Helping to create its high power and high revving capability are details such as cylinder heads with computer numerical control (CNC) intake and exhaust ports and combustion chambers - which creates ports with surgical accuracy for maximum power production. In addition, the intake valves and connecting rods are made out of high-strength lightweight titanium.

The LS7 engines are assembled by hand at GM Powertrain's new Performance Build Center in Wixom, Mich.

Pricing will be announced mid-summer; however, early estimates indicate that the GMPP LS7 crate engine will sell for well below the cost of comparable custom-built aftermarket engines.

Enthusiasts who must have the latest technology, maximum horsepower and the largest production cubic-inch displacement small-block ever built will be able to purchase the LS7, as well as other GM Performance Parts crate engines, blocks, heads and components, from GM dealerships or GMPP Authorized Centers nationwide. Following the release of the LS7 in a crate, GMPP will offer select parts, such as the crankshaft, connecting rods, cylinder heads and valves separately, and in kit form. To locate the closest GM dealership or GMPP Authorized Center or dealership, call 1-800-GM USE US or visit www.goodwrench.com.

General Motors (NYSE: GM), the world's largest vehicle manufacturer, designs, builds, and markets cars and trucks worldwide, and has been the global automotive sales leader since 1931. More information on GM can be found at www.gm.com.

I doubt that the install will be a direct bolt-in but it may not be too difficult. You still have to consider that the LS7 uses dry-sump oiling system and butterfly valves in the exhaust system that open at WOT to get exhaust flow up. The battery is mounted in the trunk. I believe the engine mounts are different and the exhaust headers will probably not match up to the available space. With the new PCM (and lack of tuning capability until it is released) I would figure you can make better power by modding existing LS6 motors. No big reason to swap to a 427 LS7.

Later ... Larry S.

Good point.

On a side note what is a good cat back exhaust system to use that is an improvement over the stock ZO6 system.Magna Flow had a good impressive review awhile back in Vette Mag. with an X pipe as well. But that was with a C5 Coupe. My Vette mechanic swears by GHL pipes.
Looking for a mild HP increase and a more aggressive sound at idle.

Correct, so you'd need to locate those parts under the hood somewhere, but I would suspect it could be done as the C5 was used as a c6 mule.

and butterfly valves in the exhaust system that open at WOT to get exhaust flow up.
The exhaust is really not an issue. That more to control noise than anything else.

The battery is mounted in the trunk.
because of the dry sump, and alos to help weight distro, but mostly because of the dry sump. But the same can be accomplished witha battery relo. kit on a C5.
I believe the engine mounts are different and the exhaust headers will probably not match up to the available space.
I have not heard of a mount change, so I don't think this is the case. The exhaust port location is the same as other heads, so headers aren't an issue AFAIK.

you can use your existing PCM. There is no way an 346 ls6 with a head flowing 100 cfm per port less on the intake side is going to beat a 427 with better internals, etc...

For me it would be the combination of Hp AND torque along with a warranty and the fact that it is stock, using today's technology. No need to worry about breaking or replacing valve springs after so many miles, no need to worry about if the cam is right or not, no need to worry about which header is "best" and no need to worry about the intake and if it is filtering correctly.
Sweet package in my mind
It sounds like it would come in at $15K or less....that is impressive
